In order for me to insure the tractor I need a chassis number/ serial number

The tractor was imported from England and is not registered

I see a metal plate on the engine which states year of manufacture 1979 and then there is a number something like 99584, I wonder will this be enough to get it insured

if the number is stamped into it, then it'll be a so sort of a serial number, such as engine number or chassis number. They should be fine for insurance purposes. Quote SN 99584.

If the numbers are cast into the metal, they are probably part numbers.

So it is on UK plates at the moment?

Why dont you get it re-registered on Irish plates and
that will make things so much easier? i.e. '79' or 'ZV' plate..

Also, be aware that is you insure it as is the insurance companies
are obliged to pass your details onto Revenue if it is not registered
on Irish plates within c.1 month.

didn,t know that what will revenue do at that stage?

what are my options, could I tax it as vintage?

Revenue then have the option of calling to your home and (most likely)
issuing a fine for an un-registered/undeclared vehicle.

Just go and get it registered 'ZV' or '79' (pay the €200 registration fee)
and then everything is above-board and road-legal. Vintage tax is only
€50 per year for ANY vehicle aged 30 years or older.

Not sure if it has changed since it came in, but that law that instructs insurance companys to tell revenue if your insuring a foreghin reg vehicle had a cut off date regarding vehicle age, so 1979 would be ok.

However this may have be changed to include all vehicles now, not sure.

If you have any paperwork for it at all, you would be best off to get it registered, 200 euro for administration and 52 euro per year tax rate.

If the tractor has no reg number at all, english or irish, you can insure it on an engine number. Many brand new unregistered machines are insured like this if not yet registered. We never had a problem insuring barnd new machines using just the chassis number, if the reg hadn't been issued.

Of course you are not leagally allowed drive on the road without the vehicle being registered and taxed, as we all know!
