Hi, I have dental work started and will take some months before it has been completed. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what and how strict the policy on dental health is? If the work has not been completed by the time of my medical (should I be lucky enough to get that far) will it mean a failure or is there any exception(s) that can be made to buy me sufficient time?

Many thanks in advance for any advice or help you can provide.

All depends on what it is/how serious I suppose, HQ will give you the most accurate answer, it's either that or you will find out in the medical itself.

Thanks thekopend, I will get in contact with HQ and see what, if any, advice they can give me. I had teeth broken while playing sports which now need extracting and bridging. The process will take a few months to complete I believe, and I hope that the work would be completed before a potential medical. And of course to find out if there any dental issues/procedures that could result in me failing the medical.

    Query re past depression

Does anyone know if a past bout of depression (thankfully ancient history :-) ) would mean a fail on the medical? The applicants' notes are vague with "fitted...mentally to perform the duties."

No it wouldnt be a fail on the medical, as long as you are mentally fit enough for the role then your past depression won't hinder your passing of the medical.

Any idea what the BMI index cut off was for the last recruitment?

27 I'm told but if you are well built with muscle I think there is a bit of leeway, some one said 30 was cut off but this time round I think they will be stricter

Obesity is a disqualifying condition and that is a BMI of 30 and over. 30 and under should be acceptable (it is for the PDF etc) but the notes only say "may be a bar" so it is down to the discretion of doctor. Gotta love the uncertainty of the medical guidelines.

yeah the opinion of the medical officer is obviously crucial in every case

The modern BMI indices are based on measurements from 1950s Australians with 2 deviations from the averages being the "normal" range. It doesn't account for things like better nutrition, individual differences in muscle mass, bone density..., that distort the height and weight measurements. There have been updates and revisions but still don't leave much flexibility.

Skin fold test is used when results over 27 are found. This quickly shows who is playing rugby and who is eating all the pies.
