air purifier for mold?

    hi all.

i've been looking through the threads in here trying to find experiences or advice with regards to mold in one bedroom. i'm looking into getting an air purifier and am wondering how much that would help treat airborne mold.

i've lived in the same room for three years now and this past month (possibly 2 months) is the first run-in with mold in my room that i've had. i'm not sure why the sudden introduction, but it's definitely here to stay.

as has been mentioned in other threads, mold/condensation can often be down to the tenant lifestyle and practises. for instance, when i first moved in and tried to pass a winter here, i closed up the vent in the wall because it is so cold in this room. i tried to open my window for short periods, to get air circulation, but i've been robbed in this house twice, both times from people getting in my window (once while i was just upstairs taking a shower), so i don't open my window very much any more. and yes, i do dry my clothes in my room, with a rack in front of my radiator. but i usually only do a small load of laundry maximum 2 times a month (one color, one whites), so that's two drying sessions per month, which doesn't seem a whole lot. and as i've said, i've been in this room for three years without a problem.

recently, i noticed mold growing on all my electric things, especially a mic stand and every single computer/electrical cable. then i found the same misty white mold growing on a pair of leather shoes i keep on the floor. i picked a day to turn my room inside out and attack every surface with dettol and bleach (silly in retrospect, as a friend later reminded me: mold isn't a germ or bacteria).

anyway, the usual story, found it in the clothes, the closet, threw away garments that i've had for years but haven't worn often, due to being absolutely covered in mold.

putting 2+2 together, i realised this must be related to the cough that i haven't been able to get rid of for more than six weeks, and how my throat is all but closed up in the morning when i sleep in this bedroom. sometimes i'll sleep in the living room after falling asleep to a film, or in my friend's bed upstairs if we're watching a movie in bed, and my throat always feels fine in the mornings.

anyhow, after plenty of reading, i'm going to look into cleaning out the gutters, making sure the below floor vents outside aren't blocked up, then get some mold removing spray and do the whole room down again. i also wanted to get an air purifier just to help with the infinite dust and hopefully the airborn mold spores. i will be moving out in a few months' time, hopefully, but i'd like to get rid of as much mold and spores as i can now, if feasible.

it's an old, very cold, uninsulated house, and most diy things are left up to me, not the landlord, though he has helped with a few issues in the past.

any good experiences with portable air purifiers in relation to mold?

    thanks.
