High Fuel consumption of Honda Civic

    Hi there,

I've Japanese import Honda Civic 2003 (Automatic) 1.5Litre and I've recently noticed it cosumes lot of Fuel (Petrol).
Last two times I fill the tank and average mileage was 6.25 km per litre which I think is not great.
Just few things to mention before I ask you to advise me how to get the most of the performance and maximum mileage per litre:

This car is mostly used in residential area for droping kids to school or to buy stuff from supermarket etc.
Since winter began I use heater turned on most of time when kids are in car.
Since this is rarely used for long trip and Annual mileage is also very low, I don't service it regularly except changing the engine oil.
Few months ago I brought it to garage where was advised only oil needs to be changed as plugs, oil filter, air filter were changed recently.

I don't know what else I can check so it can give me economical average.
Could you please share if 6.25 Kilometers are normal for this type of car or what other steps I should take to get maximum mileage from this car.

    Thanking you in advance.

To convert 6.25km per litre to MPG, just put it into Google: https://www.google.ie/search?q=6.25+km+per+litre+to+mpg&oq=6.25+km+per+litre+to+mpg&aqs=chrome..69i57.1690j0j7&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8

It appears that it's reading at 17MPG which is quite bad, but then again, the fact that it's an automatic won't help things.

Is there a way you can reset that measurement on the on board computer? Some people will argue that the MPG readings aren't accurate and the best way to do it is to work it out manually based on mileage and amount of petrol put in per fill at petrol stations.

A service should have helped the MPG a little too..

Err... 6.75km / litre is roughly 18 miles per gallon. Nope, that's not normal!

Now the excessive fuel consumption could be anything. But start with the simple things:

    1. When was it last serviced? Oil, filters, sparks?
    2. Does the car seem sluggish? (seized caliper?)
    3. Any lights on the dash emmissions? (knock sensor)
    4. When was the AT/CVT fluid changed?

FWIW, we've a 2 litre Auto Honda Stream and get about 30MPG.

<edit> I see the oil was done recently, but were the sparks and air filters checked?

How are you calculating the km/l? Are you just relying on the display in car or are you working it out?

18mpg is awful though; I get better than that from a Type R that I wouldnt exactly take it easy in! Have you mentioned it to the garage?

I am not even bothered to google but reading it comes to me that 30ish mpg is around the 10l mark?? So 17 for 6 something should be way more.

OP, I had an older civic she done 6.1 on better days in urban, so I wouldnt worry on yours, especially auto, only in case you`d noticed waay lower consumption before.

    EDIT:Welcome to the boards

Are you thinking in terms of l/100km? The OP is getting 6.25km/l, not l/100km; thats 17-18mpg which is appalling by the standards of pretty much any car (my Integra gets about twice that).

If car only is driven for very short trips(less than 4-5 km), it is possible to see that kind of consumption in winter with an automatic car.

If you are having longer trips occasionally, then something should be wrong with the car.

I don`t even know in what terms I am thinking thats 100%

Shtall the beans there now, first things first.

OP where did this 6.25 figure come from? Are you seeinging 6.25 on the dash, or are you calculating it? If on the dash, is there any possibility that 6.25 is l/100km, and not km per litre?

Sorry to doubt you but there was someone boasting here recently about getting "6.9%" on their last car trip.

    Who even uses km/l?

    Dutchland and Denmark.

Check that you don't have a stuck brake caliper piston by checking after a drive to see if one wheel seems warmer than the others.

Had this happen to me and the fuel economy took a big hit - unsurprisingly.

Oregato, congratulations, you have just won the Boards.ie understatement of the year competition. Well done. :P:pac::P

OP, you'd get better mileage from one of these!

^^^ would be closer to the 17 gallons per mile than 17mpg :P

You say recently noticed... so since it got colder? Potentially that's a failed coolant temperature sensor, or faulty thermostat.

    Check your tyre pressure.
