Looking for some advice if possible :)

Car went in for service today and just got the initial update telling me that my brake discs are in bad shape but they can skim them for me. I queried whether this was in evidence when I bought the car in January this year. Yer wan says to me that it's just wear and tear and the report indicated it was all good with the pads and discs when they took the car in.

Main dealer service off the M50, car is a 1.5 2wd Qashqai. No off roading, normal everyday driving with good runs weekly

So question: Granted I didn't know the condition of the discs in January but can discs go bad in that space of time if they and the pads were in good shape? Wear on the pads I'd expect.. but discs?

Know what? I just tried to anticipate questions about how I've driven the car and give a little detail upfront.

Entirely dependent on how many miles you do, and a year is not too short a time for discs to go from OK to being worth replacing. How old is the car?

09 Import from the UK, 16700 miles on the clock when we took it and just broke 28000 last week.

Id refuse that work and have it inspected somewhere else. If they are bad fair enough but dealers are all too fond of charging for discs and pads.

Skimming discs - nonsense. If they need replacing, replace them

Skimming or replacing discs at 28k miles with no excessive pad-wear or damage - something smells IMHO and not burning pads.

If yer wan that rang you is not a tech, ring back and ask to speak to the service manager.

16700 miles on a 3.5 year old car seems odd to me.

Not saying it is the case, but if the car was clocked coming in from the UK that would explain why it may need disks, if the mileage is actually alot higher than you think.

Unless it was clocked when you got it in from UK. 16.7k miles seems awfully low for what was a 3 year old UK diesel car.

    Edit: beaten

I tell them no thanks just do the service and go get a second opinion off an independant mechanic. If a garage asked to skim my brake disks I'd never go back to them. They either need changed or they don't.

'Bad shape'? What does that mean? Warped, uneven wear?

Warping can be quite sudden but id be surprised if you didnt notice a warped disk. Steering wheel goes mad

Dont mind me, Im only teasing, what I meant was even though the Qashqai is marketed as a compact SUV, implying off road capability due to a few extra inches of clearance, it is in fact a tall(ish) hatchback with family car power and a FWD setup, making its offroad potential about as good as my granny's holed slippers - so we knew without you mentioning it that you wouldnt have been offroading in it.

Has it ever been marketed as any form of offroad capable vehicle though? I can't say I've met any Qashqai owners that have ever been of the illusion that they'd be beating Land Rover Defenders to the top of Killaminjaro in one.

I've met a couple. Usually when the snow hits, at the start of the routes up to the Dublin mountains. They don't beat the bald tire people wagon brigade though.

Skimming the disks is legit but the kit is expensive and its time consuming to use and usually cheaper to replace the disks. I think its used where disks are expensive and still within wear limits ie supercars. Maybe maindealers offer it as their disks are so dear? I know aftermarket good disks are usually less than 30 euros each so its a pointless exercise to skim disks.
