My OH has a pair of quite dark jeans, they're all the one shade and we were wondering if there is any way to fade parts of them, e.g. thighs and back of thighs to make them look a bit better.classic case of looking better in the shop!the fit is excellent but he feels they look very plain. Any help greatly appreciated!

Fading on denim is down to the nature of the fabric, in that it's made up of two fibres, blue and white woven together(black denim not so much). The fading is down to the indigo blue dye not being very colurfast and abrasion. That's why I'd not advise bleaching them as it will look "wrong" gank and cheap and likely ruin the jeans.

It also depends on the type of denim. Raw unwashed denim fades quicker, but even prewashed can fade quickly enough. Being already very dark this should make things easier. Wear them a lot(say around the house all the time, doing DIY and such) and don't wash them for ages. This will naturally wear them in in spots. Then a hot wash will expose the worn/rubbed parts as fading. Some denim nerd types won't wash their jeans for a year or more(I kidd thee not), keeping them in the fridge to keep down the funk, even rub sand into their jeans to speed up this wear, but I think that only works with raw denim(these guys even have different names for different types of fading). IIRC not washing them for ages means that the blue dye doesn't get redistributed in the wash every time which makes them fade overall rather than in spots which is what you're after.

Actual natural fading of jeans doesn't happen on the thighs so much and defo not on the backs of thighs so that looks odd IMHO. Natural fading occurs at the knees ass, frontal gentlemans area and around the pockets which again IMHO looks far better.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I agree with Wibbs. Wear the heck out of them. I've just gotten a pair of Hiut organic 12 oz raw denim jeans and they are great. Hard work to break in. If you can refrain from washing them for about 6 months or more. After the body has moulded and shaped them they will look fantastic.

Handy denim guide here in three parts.
