Hi all. Myself and two friends will be doing our first DIY-budget ski holiday.

I have been looking at Germany and Austria. My tow friends have only skied once before so I need a resort to keep them happy and me challenged.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks

    Hi Crosbie!

I'd say your main issue will be getting accommodation for 4 days, since most places book by the week at that time.

If you're thinking Germany/Austria, look at Aer Lingus to Munich for your flights since Salzburg flights only go on Sat/Sun so won't work for your 4 day plan. You can also fly Ryanair into Memmingen.

I'm a fan of Soll and the Skiwelt, (will fit your budget piece!), Soll is a 90 min taxi transfer from Munich (€49pp), Or €20pp on the train, plus an approx €20 (total) taxi transfer to the resort. You can email the tourist office here http://www.wilderkaiser.info/en/ and give them your dates and requirements and they'll get back to you with a list of offers. They've offices around the skiwelt so if you're open to any resort I'm sure you'll find something!

I'm sure somebody else will be on soon too with other suggestions, but there's something for you to start with! Munich Flights are still pretty cheap around that time too :-)

    Good luck! And enjoy :-)

I was thinking Memmingen and then to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Obersdorf - could anyone recommend any hotels/self-catering in these resorts. Also it seems that the train is failry easy to use from airport to these destinations - given I dont speak any German would this be a lot of hassle?

crosbie: Garmisch is a great spot for a 4 day break some great skiing snow sure with a glacier and really different really Bavarian and cheap as chips.

For accommodation have a look at the link below! An incredible place only 30EUR a night with breakfast but you will need a car as its a 10 min drive to the hill in the morning. On the other side it is up its own private Gondola just beyond the Olympic stadium and ski jump.

If you want to stick to the train, it is easy to get from Munich to Garmisch direct train and takes about 70 minutes from the airport. You will have tons of English speaking people in Garmisch, most of the locals speak pretty good english, and there is a huge US/British air force base near bye. The pizza restaurant beside the Casino in the town square is great for dinner.

Thanks Fattes. garmisch looks like a good option alright and a bit different. If we are to stay at you suggested hotel is it nearer to the glacier or classic. Also is there much of a trek between the two.

    That's again for the pointers.

    crosbie
Both Hausberg and Alpspitze are about a 10-15 min drive from that hotel including the gondola ride down from the hotel to the car. The glacier is another 10 min but also takes nearly 40 min in the Gondola or train to get up to.

There is not much to keep most amused beyond a day on the Glacier and the two linked areas of Hausberg and Alpsitze are cracking some of the runs are scary steep! Conditions at the bottom can get sketchy but higher up is normally really good. I was there last Feb, 1st day conditions were terrible last day we were skiing powder!

    Thats nature I guess

Fattes we have pulled the trigger on this and booked Ryanair flights for 11 jan. We are thinking of getting the train as we have no volunteers to drive!, how long is the journey? Any recommendations for accommodation as we will have no car? Thanks

Train is just shy if 2 hours from memory it runs every hour, buy a Bavaria ticket it's 27€ and covers 5 adults on thee train! Train is direct but you have to get an sbhan from the airport to station. Covered on the Bavaria ticket (link below)

Have only ever stayed in the previous spot but I know a local and will ask him and get back to you

    Hi,
If you have not yet booked your accomodation in Garmisch partenkirchen why not go directly spith of Memmingen to oberstorf and the Kleinwalsertal. Kleinwalsertal is a skiers paradise. It belongs to Austria but only accessible from Germany.

It has great skiing on uncrowded slopes with lots of skiing for beginners and more advanced skiers. the villages of Riezlern and Baad are good spots. accommodation should not be a problem for 4 nights in any of the B&bs (Pensione) as this is a quiet period after the Christmas rush.
If you dont have a car, the allgau airport express has a coach going directly from Memmingen allgau airport to Kleinwalsertal. It departs on 11 jan according to their online schedule at 10:30 and takes approx 1 hoir and 15 minutes.
Alternative you cpuld rent a car if you wanted to and drive down the motorway. sixt is an excellent car rental at the Allgau airport, they are usually hassle free and fast. Going to the kleinwalsertal you would need winter tyres and possibly even showchains too. But the motorway up to oberstdorf will be clear of snow.

I meant to include a link to the kleinwalsertal area where there is lots of information. Here it is.

    http://www.kleinwalsertal.com/en

To get to the various villages and ski resorts throughout the village, there is a bus called the Walserbus that goes throughout the day.
