For the benefit of others, can you say if you were able to to the Santa in Lapland experience independent of a travel company, I think that's what the OP wants to know.

That's EXACTLY what we did. We flew Dublin to Helsinki via Manchester return (no direct flights I'm afraid) which cost around €400 a head then got the overnight train to Rovaniemi (http://www.vr.fi/en/index/aikataulut/auto_ja_yojunat/helsinki-rovaniemi-helsinki.html) which is just amazing. There is a supermarket beneath Helsinki train station where you can load up on food and drink the kids will eat e.g. ham, rolls, crisps etc (limited service in the train) and turn the train journey into an adventure in itself playing cards etc. The pure novelty of getting into bed on a train and then when you wake up and open the curtains WOW!! All you see as far as the horizon is snow covered fields and forests.

Pick a hotel from http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotels-g189922-Rovaniemi_Lapland-Hotels.html and you're good to go. You get a taxi from The hotel to http://www.santaclausvillage.info and you can spend the good 4-5 hours there or more if you want.

When we went we spent 3 days/2 nights there so the first day we went to Santa's Village and the 2nd and 3rd day we went to the local ski resort (again a 10 minute taxi) and had a ball for 2 days. We'd never ski'd before so we took lessons and by the 2nd day my 9 year old son was skiing down the mountain by himself. (I was still on the baby slope :-( ) See http://www.ounasvaara.fi/en

Rovaniemi is a small city so not a lot of adult nightlife but if you're going with kids that won't be high on your agenda. We basically had a casual dinner (pizza etc) each evening and toddled off to bed around 9pm as everyone was tired from the days activities.

You get the overnight train back to Helsinki on your last day and fly home.

It really was a great great trip which we'll never forget. You can do as much or as little as you like.
