Hey guys- so my sky dish seems to have moved with the weather this weekend. Sky have said they will send out an engineer at a cost of €100!! Should I just ring a local engineer or what, I'm really not up for spending that kind of money this close to Xmas just for the dish to be moved slightly. Or maybe I'm being too cheap?!

Same happened my dish at the weekend. I called Sky and was told the earliest they could schedule a repair was January 2nd!
There was no mention of a fee but they did say it would be a warranty repair as the dish was installed by Sky in July this year.
I ended up getting a ladder and moving the dish myself as otherwise we would have no TV over Christmas.
I would definitely threaten to cancel your Sky account OP. Sky only care about money!

It's crazy that I just got it installed but because I was nice and kept the box that's where the warranty is- a year from getting the box, not from install. Seem to be making headway now- had to make some noise :-/

I had the same issue and Sky told me it would be the New Year before they could get anyone out so I've had to organise someone myself to fix it.

I am now seriously considering cancelling my Sky subscription in the New Year and going the Saorview\Freeview route instead.

In the same boat 31st of December was the earliest I could get an engineer out but I've rigged my PC up to my TV with sky go on it and an unblock thingy for my browser for us TV

Did you manage to get the signal back once you moved dish? was it guesswork or how did you go about doing it? in the same boat myself...want to get signal back for freeview

If you can't fix it yourself, try ringing your local aerial/satellite installer, some charge a lot less than Sky do. If the dish is easy to access its a simple job to realign, esp with a 'sat Finder' to measure the signal strength.

A search on google will find lots of advice such as this..

Yes I got the signal back. I just slowly moved the dish until the picture came through on the TV (I asked a friend to keep an eye on the TV while I was moving the dish).
It was quite easy in the end but I suppose it depends how much your dish has moved.

At the risk of sounding silly,I,m sure you used the signal strength menu on screen?
I asked Sky recently what would happen if I cancelled my agreement, which is outside the year contract , with a view to then rejoining as a new customer.
I was told that I would not be able to rejoin Sky for a year!So maybe we need to be a little careful on this issue?

    Just quoting the Sky Lady.
A friend in Belfast told me she had known of people who had to go to Virgin cable for a year and then returned to Sky. Anyone prepared to try it over Christmas?

Well I just called a local guy to come and fix it. Said he had a ton of calls about dishes that were off alignment because of the wind.

Next day service, better than Sky's 6th January!

I ended up having to call out a local company after the wind moved my dish for the second time. I called Gallaghers TV from Rathmines. They came out the next day and sorted everything out.
I will definitely cancel $ky as soon as my contract is up in July. Their customer service is terrible.

Turns out my dish was actually broken. The wind had moved it to such an extent that it snapped the bracket. I live by the sea so the salt air makes metal prone to rust.

Guy came and fixed it, new dish, €120 all in. TV back on. Great service.

Just did the same thing for my sister in law, lnb arm rusted through. She also lived by the coast.

Same happened to my dish, rusted to hell, It's a wonder it didn't fall down without any wind it was so rotten. Bought a new one aluminum one and galvanised wall bracket from TVtrade. Also bought a quad LNB, e50 all in next day delivery.

Stupidly in my haste of ordering the dish, I never thought to buy a Sat Finder, does anyone in the Claremorris area have one I could borrow (being Christmas and all that:D)

I got it mounted yesterday, and I'm going to try a App called 'Satellite Position' when the weather improves today to try and allign it but can't imagine it would work.

It may have been a rust proof dish, hence the price if not then the fitter will have a nice xmas but for a good service better than giving money to sky.

Try using dishpointer.com. It allows you to zoom into your house via google maps and then points you in the right direction of the satellite. Also if you have a smart phone or compass you will be able to align the dish in the correct direction.
    Good luck!

QWERTY. If you set dish up with correct elevation and brackets dead straight then switch on sky box go to services, 4 system setup, 6, signal test, it will show either a little under signal strength, signal quality, all you want first is a lock, now this depends where your tv is, but turn volume up loud on tv, open window, then go out and move dish so that it is pointing 28east roughly, wait and if you hit signal sound will come on. each time you move pause as it takes a few seconds for signal to hit dish and then box, look at other sky dishes for a bearing, ie that annoying background muisc, at the moment it sounds like a xmas jingle, it does change. once u hear sound, have a look at signal etc. Or better still if you can see tv from dish you can use channel 501.

    happy xmas
