    Hi

I want to buy my son who is into mixing music with his Trakkor and Laptop and who does the odd 18th and 21st for his mates a present for Xmas.

Was thinking of good set of DJ headphones for him - any ideas??

Also - was looking into getting him his own Speakers that would be suitable for a House -Party setup?? Any ideas - would expect that this would be bigger money than earphones - but he always stuck for speakers and has to rent same at €80 or so a night. Again any ideas who be welcome..

Check out thomann.de. You'll need an amp for the speakers also. As for headphones I use the Sony MDR v700's quality build and last years if looked after!

Keep things simple for him and look for Active Speakers. All in one solution. TBox are thomann own brand but if you want lots of Irish shops do the low end speakers and adverts.ie is full of them.

A cheap set of headphones will do initially.

Alto active speakers seem to be the pick of the budget range. Djbox in tallaght sell them if you are in Dublin, they also have an online store djbox.ie and will courier.

Also look at behringer or tboxx on thomann.de as suggested. If you are unsure of what you are looking for pm me.

If you're going to get him headphones that will last him years go for Sennheiser HD-25's.

Made in Ireland, all the parts are user replaceable, brilliant sound off them and excellent design.

The TMA-1's that AIAIAIA do are really nice as well, comfier than the Sennheisers and a little bit cheaper.

For speakers, a cheap pair of active monitors should do the job more than well. KRK do really good solid ones.

No they're not. In fact, the only criticism I'd have of the TMA's is that the hard plastic on the headband can become quite uncomfortable after long periods of use.

Ah fair enough - I've only tried them on briefly, always a Sennheiser man myself, have seen some excellent reviews of the TMA-1's but only mentioned them here because they're cheaper than the Sennheisers.

Thanks for that PM with the heads up about that advert btw, sorry if I was really rude for not replying.

Just on the topic of monitors lads, I'm just looking for a decent cheap set of monitors/speakers to hook up to my laptop and iPod. Preferably not second hand, but haven't a clue what I'm looking out for to be honest.. Something that would do for a small house party I guess or a bit of bedroom DJing. Shops like Harvey Normans don't seem to stock anything that I'd be looking for, so might look to thomann. Anyone be able to help me out? Wouldn't really want to go over €150.

I'm on my second pair of Sennheiser HD-205s, excellent value for the price. More than enough for casual house party dj'ing, and not a disaster if they get lost/broken/stolen. Two year warranty as well!

In general, Dj headphones need to be nice and loud and more importantly the cups have to cover the ear fully to block out external sound, allowing the Dj to hear the song he's mixing in next...top-end audio quality isn't as important..

You might want to opt for less expensive headphones and put the difference towards some monitors, which are more vital for a good party in my view!

Regarding speakers, you're probably looking at around 300 euro for anything suitable. Standard living room hi-fi systems aren't really the way to go though..a small PA system which is designed for gigging makes more sense.

Here's a good example from Behringer - 200W active speaker, fairly compact and easy to move around, sturdy and easy to set up. Seeing as 'house party' usually means small kitchen or living room, 200 watt should be enough!

300 euro for a pair, but you won't have them in time for Christmas. Music stores do stock them though, if you're in Dublin shouldn't be too hard to find!!

Hope it all goes well anyway..:)

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-SENNHEISER-HD201-DJ-STEREO-HEADPHONES-MP3-IPOD-UK-/130754342144?pt=UK_AudioVisualElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Headphones&hash=item1e7190ed00

    quality headphones for little money,

as regards berhinger / thomann and alto / prosound etc

    BUY CHEAP BUY TWICE

a old set of peavey hysys or similar will cost 150-200 euro and they have a fuse to protect speaker when they get put too loud saving the expensive repair bills

next, get a good s/h (serviced) amplifier names like zeck / crown / qsc can all be picked up for approx 200 euro for a 200w amp

the 350 would be well spent instead of spending more on second rate gear

just my 2 cents but i hate all this cheap stuff as it floods the second hand market giving s/h traders a hard time to shift good gear

i still have my first rig, its still worth what i paid for it, never had to do a repair, did have to upgrade amp though

pm me if you like with what you want to buy and i can maybe assist

    I didn't know Thomann did own-brand gear?

Always had great service when ordering from them. Top marks.

    BUY CHEAP BUY TWICE

Was about to say that regarding getting "cheap speakers"

+1 on the Sennheisers HD 25, I don't use them but seems every dj i know swears by them.

Buy him a pair of active monitors (speakers with in-built amplifiers).

Easy set up and break down time.

Don't buy him KRK studio monitors to use in parties, they are for one thing and thats to be used in a studio.

Under 1000 you should be able to get the Headphones and a pair of RCF Art (Active Speakers) all brand new!

If on a tight budget get the headphones new and look around the boards for used active speakers.

    Better late than never ah.

The good thing about threads is that someone else somewhere might need the same advise.

    :))

Hi all... want to restart this thread as I have am now (a year after this thread!) looking for similar advice on a budding DJ set of Speakers. My lad does a few 18th etc for mates as well a few house parties...great for his confidence!!

He has taken my Technics speakers from my sitting room setup...... but don't think this is the ideal solution for him.

So... am looking at spending up to €300 on a pair.

Anything of value out there that you can guide me toward???

    Many thanks

I have a set of these and I really like them. Probably not ideal for doing parties with as they are monitors but if it was only house parties and the like they'd be fine, they'd certainly be loud enough.
