Got rotavirus (and cryptosporidium ) in calves last year and put in an order with vet for vaccine for 2014 season but got a call from vet Friday that it won't be available till March ( if even then)
Seems earlier vaccine supplies failed to be supplied
ElsewhereTrivacton 6 came in a few days ago but almost gone

I haven't vaccinated for years so I dont know if this is usual or a bluff ie what are these companies up to ---- you would imagine that they would know when these vaccines are needed

Deal with a purchasing group and managed to source only 20 doses of Lactovac last week. It was the only vaccine available as Trivacton & Rotavec Corona not in stock and demand exceeding supply.
I think the problem is a carry-over from last year as I heard that a large batch of Rotavec Corona failed quality control and had to be dumped - you'd think they'd have ramped up production since though!!!

Got a couple of bottles a few days ago here from the vet was plenty in stock, re crypto therez no vaccine for it you need to go with halocur for a few days after the calves are born

none of these will be effective without cleaning out , powerwashing and disenfecting, also making sure they get the rotavec corona biestings

Are you saying to dose calves routinely for a few days after calfing?

I pulled out and dumped all the wooden slats ( worked ok for last 20 years)
House is fairly clean but I suppose you are right I have to get cracking with the power washing - Could take a while. - is there any disinfectant in particular more suited putting through the power washer .

    Thanks

I USE INTERKOKASK, used to use oocide but its gone off the market, i use knapsack to spray it. You also need to think about moving your calf shed, yes halocur 3 x4ml (12ml)/day for 3 days from birth....

I have been working on getting quotes for new calf shed but for many reasons it would not be finished on time for 2014 season (I have cleaned the accumulated junk out of an old indoor silage pit to give me more space - hopefully a disease free area it with the old cubicle shed beside it will hopefully be an area for robot for 2014)

I got one bottle of halocur last year but did not end up using it as the vet gave me injections that was supposed work on rotavirus and cryptosporidium .

Also looking at upping the beastings routine.

Luckily I got enough trivacton 6 but at 2 shots costing 6 euro each it was an expensive bunch of little bottles

i use single pens that can be taken apart and moved, these are in a different shed each year, then calves are moved to groups, sheds cleaned out, washed and disenfected about once a month...

I have heard from a relation that they are giving the calfs two bolus at calving rather than trying to vaccinate the cows says he gets them from his vet and they are flying out the door --supposedly lads in his area are getting on great with them

"Response capsules. " anybody hear have any experience with them
