How do you approach betting?Stake?Value?

Over the past while I've noticed that the majority(50%) of my winnings are from tips on this forum with only 10% of my total bets going on these tips. Therefore It's quite clear that whatever method I select my horses clearly isnt working and is only filling the bookies pockets. It is true, also, that there are quite a lot of knowledgable members on this forum so I would value your input and see if I (and others) can learn some tips. I understand del roy has a similiar thread but I felt starting a new thread would give me more direct feedback for the questions I have.

So how do you arrive at a selection? Do you research every race or just select a race at random and then analyse that? What staking strategy do you use? Is there certain trainers you follow? Do you just bet on info you receive or market movers? Are you winning/breaking even?

Another query I have is in relation to betting for value. There has been quite a debate lately around this with some posters(cant recall whom) stating they would back a horse at 14s or 16s but not at 8s(value gone). I can understand this if a horse I fancied was 7s or 8s and is now 3s or 2s. I wouldnt be eager to bet on it at all. but at these higher prices Id adopt the "a winners a winner" approach. I wouldnt be thrown off fully by a horse shortening to 8s from 14s. Or is all this "value" debate with a view to laying etc.

It's simple really, if you saw a horse at 16/1 on one screen & the same horse is 8/1 on a different screen. Which price are you going to take? Obviously you'll take 16/1. It' small about value. I can never understand people backing a horse that was a double figure price at a single figure price. It is the quickest way to the poor house. Don't ever let a gamble influence you unless you've got actual information.

One piece of advice I will give you is if you can get a 7/4 shot at 2/1 or something a small bit higher then back it. If you see a horse being backed from 8/1 into 4/1 then lay it. Look for value & when you think you've found it then go for it. I very rarely follow trainers unless I'm focusing on one particular meeting. Today is perfect because there's only 3 meetings on.

I just go through the entries, check what flying machines are entered up,wait till decs are out and consider how much to have on the good things then get up early an have my shirt on anything W P Mullins sends out thats half decent, its that simple really.

The first thing you need to remember is that any ordinary guy that is backing on several races on 3 or days of every week is going to be a loser at the end of the week.If the bets are modest and he can afford to lose them and is just doing it for enjoyment then fair enough its a good pasttime. Also reliable 'tips' or 'insde information' is something that you come accross maybe 3 or 4 times a year, anything else is just horseshyte.
