    Hi Folks,
Just wondering if anyone could tell me what the eyesight requirements for the class 2 irish aviation medical would be. I have been told I have astigmatism in my eyes will this be a major problem? I wear glasses for television. Don't need them by law for driving. Also what else is involved in the medical? Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi, while these are the CAA standards, you will find they will be pretty much the exact same for the IAA medical:

"An applicant may be assessed as fit with hypermetropia not exceeding +5.0 dioptres, myopia not exceeding -6.0 dioptres, astigmatism not exceeding 2.0 dioptres, and anisometropia not exceeding 2.0 dioptres, provided that optimal correction has been considered and no significant pathology is demonstrated. Distant visual acuity, with or without correction, shall be 6/12 or better in each eye separately and with both eyes shall be 6/9 or better."

For more on standards and what to expect (again CAA) have a look here:

I've a class 1 and I can't read the top line of the eye chart without my contacts, so I doubt you need to worry!

If you don't need glasses to drive you're are probably ok to flying, but if you wear them for the telly you'll benefit from wearing them flying. Get yourself a pair of prescription sunglasses too, all the better to see and avoid!

How could you need them for TV and not driving. They are both the same thing, short sighted, Myopia.

Maybe he's just more bothered about seeing what's on the TV?

Seriously though, requirements for driving are very generous. So long as you have 1 almost functional eye you're grand. Flying is a bit stricter. And he did say 'by law' he was ok for driving.

BTW, whoever said they couldn't read the first line for their class 1, I'd keep that quiet at the next medical :)

    Not to get picky, but...
There's also a requirement for uncorrected vision to be of a standard. And I think the standard expected is a bit better than the first line of the Snellen chart :)

Uncorrected vision is tested at every renewal, so they are well aware of my vision level. I just did mine 2 weeks ago and they've no problem with my myopia.

The UK EASA requirements are more lax than JAA. I got my C2 in the UK. Afaik the Easa requirements are in here recently which are different to the above. My myopia is -5.75 astigmatism is -1.75 but myopia always adds astigmatism to it so myopia would be -7.5 at the worst point so outside the older requirements.

Ah chillax there captain. It was said in jest. Much like your comment about not being able to see the top line. Anyway congrats on your medical and your move across. :)

Thanks for all the replies folks, very encouraging. Beauf, what I meant was I dont legally need glasses to drive but I do still wear them most of the time while driving. I have slight astigmatism in my eyes so hopefully this doesnt screw me over.
