2006 Ford Focus - Power failure while driving

    Hi all,

I have a 2006 Ford Focus (MII) 1.6 Petrol Automatic with 101,000KM on the clock. It recently had a service and passed the NCT but 5 times in the last 8 months I've had the following problem:

Start car, start accelerating - car feels sluggish but engine sounds normal, suddenly car loses engine power (hitting accelerator does nothing) and I lose power steering. The malfunction and battery indicators light up on the dashboard but no messages are displayed. The rest of the electronics seem fine (lights, radio stay on). I pull over, turn engine off and back on again - problem goes away.

Any ideas of what this could be?

I think the alternator was a problem on that model. I'd have the battery tested first though and also get it scanned for any ECU fault codes.

Okay I'll have to book it in and get it checked out.

It's weird how it's very intermittent... less than once a month but still enough to be a serious problem when it happens.

If it's the alternator, does anyone have a rough idea about how much a new one would cost?

    Thanks bazz26

Get it scanned for codes. If you see a fuel pump shutdown code it may be the CPS.

    Possibly alternator.

    More than likely battery.

That being said when it's the battery it would happen fairly quick.

Bad time of year for both and car lights failing.

Could also be a faulty instrument cluster. It is pretty common on the Mk2 Focus.

OP, Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue. I've had same problem on and off for 4 yrs now and have spent alot of money on diagnostics with main dealers, replacing parts etc. It's now stopped turning on completely hs been off the road for 2 months and Ford dealer are racking up the bills and getting no closer to solution. They have said it's the EGR valve then it was the wiring loom, then fuel pump and maybe the ECU...all costing big €€€€€'s.
