    How did the term anal retented come to mean obsessive compulsive disorder? I don't see the link between saying someone is anal and that meaning that they are particular!

    In short, it's because Freud thought that having trouble toilet training makes you fussy and uptight in later life.

    My understanding is that anally retentive people basically go around with a pain in their hole all day because they subconsciously tense the muscles in response to a psychological aversion to the area. This means they are 'uptight'.

    People with OCD can be perceived as uptight because of their compulsion to try and control a specific subset of their environment to a notably high degree of precision, imposing strict boundaries on themselves.

    Now to google to see how well I did.

    One of the major forms of OCD is an obsession with cleanness, Freud also suggested that people who fail to pass through the Anal Stage will become stuck at this stage of development and can become fixated with keeping clean. The two may have become interlinked by someone along the way

    It draws a direct link between being retentive - unwilling to let things go, and so controlling - to controlling your surroundings/thoughts/actions in a controlling, obsessive way.

    Some children hang on at the potty stage as a means of controlling their bodies and associated functions, the term extrapolates this into adult life tendencies.
