Looing at an e90 model bmw 320d with c. 170k miles on the clock. former uk import with some service history. the car is a 2006. should i stay away from such a high mileage car and what should i look out for in buying one of these machines?

You'd want to be paying small money for that maybe 2004 money as a guide

Thanks bigus, prob get it for c. 6200. too high a price?? are these models problematic with high mileage?

Too high, it's a hard sell for the vendor, it's almost approaching un sellable mileage which is going to be your problem soon.

If it had an impeccable service history it might be a slightly better proposition.

I'd take chance at mid three to early 4 k depending on spec, remember whats it going to be worth with 195 miles soon enough, when your stuck with it.

However although it has high miles , you have the benefit of a modern car and the safety and efficiency that goes with the modernity for potentially small money. But it needs to be small money.
What are high mileage ones making on autotrader ?

It depends how long you're going to drive it for. New turbo and if it has a clean body, hang on to it. Selling it next year don't bother. Still think the price is a bit rich, 5k is reasonable.

Not if you get it cheap enough,no such thing as a bad car only a bad price,

make a low ball offer, and we'll have a laugh at challenge master next week, when you land it cheap.
