Win8.1 and overclocking ?

So i installed windows 8.1 last weekend, while im not mad about the main screen with metro tiles its easy to just bypass this feature.
Overall im very happy, everything is just faster, boot time of about 5-6 seconds.
However after a week of being stable i thought id overclock my i5 2500k back to what ive used for a year but it resulted in a system crash while gaming.
I find this weird as temps never went over 40 c and ive had it overclocked for a year on windows 7 @ 4.5ghz without a single issue.
I have enough cooling ,as i say never had an issue with win7.
Im wondering if windows 8.1 pro is sensitive in some way to CPU OCing?

Yesterday while i was out i kept the system overclocked and booted up a game and let it idle ingame, i chose borderlands 2.
I got back 4 hours later and the system had froze.
I went back to stock speeds and idled ingame in BL2 again and let it sit there all night for 11 hours and all was well with no crash or freeze.

I could be wrong but it seems like the overclock might be the issue.

Anyone else any experience or issues with win8.1 and OCing?
