Anybody else not getting to go home for Christmas?

I have to stay in Edinburgh over Christmas for work related reasons. This will be my third Christmas away from home. I was home last Christmas alright but I spent the previous two in Scotland. I'm not upset over any sort of religious reasons as I'm an atheist but I love Christmas as a family celebration. Also I get to go home on the 28th for a few days. Anybody else in similar circumstances? Feeling homesick or sad?

Also Fairytale of New York just came on the radio and none of my Scottish friends or flatmates understand that it's the best Christmas song ever. This alone is reason to wish that I was at home!

I'm not even romanticising the Pogues. Back when I was working in hospitality Shane McGowan came into my workplace and told me to "**** off you cnut" just because I didn't have tabasco sauce for his vodka. I just love the song.

I've actually never spent a Christmas away but I bet it's a big deal. I thought I'd be away this year but I went back to do a Master's so I'm still knocking around ;)

Thank you! It is a big deal, even though I love Edinburgh and it's amazing here for most of the year, being away for Christmas is still hard. Christmas here is still beautiful though, what with the German market and winter wonderland and whatnot.

Try not to think about it Sinead. Soon it will be over and you can do a bit of First Footing. Am not going home 'til mid Jan 2005 but won't start thinking about it 'til October next. Happy Christmas in Princess St and a mega piss up New Year! :D

Thanks, I live in Edinburgh full time and absolutely love it. Christmas is probably the only time that it doesn't seem so charming!

Yeah, but in the greater scheme of things it's all good.

You're away living life in the 21st century. They'll spoil you rotten when they see you next,

Won't be home for Christmas but am making a surprise visit next week for a couple of days , haven't been home for 18 months and I'm looking forward to seeing the auld pair , sis , brother and my niece and nephew. I've a lot of presents got , hope the straps on the bag hold up.

And to make it a bit more fun was talking to the mammy tonight and she was saying .... You'll have to make the effort to visit in the new year.

    She has no idea :)

Fair play! I want to plan a surprise visit one of these days! Knowing my luck everyone will be away at the time and I'll be locked out though!

Funny that, I nearly had to spend Christmas '04 in Edinburgh because of a missed flight. Took a bit of ringing around and calling in favours on my parents part, but managed to get another ticket sorted for late Christmas eve. Arrived in Dublin, got the bus into busarus to get home, only to find I had missed the last bus. So my brother had to come up to collect me after midnight Christmas morning... I wasn't the favourite son that Christmas,

Thing is, when I had missed the first flight, I wasn't too worried. 2ManyDJ's were playing Stephen's day I think, and I went and got tickets for it. Gutted I missed that show.

So, what'll you do on the day Sinead? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,283 ✭✭✭Glico Man

This is my first Christmas that I won't be going home. I'm currently in Belfast and my Dad lives on the Isle of Wight and I'm working from now until Christmas Eve and then I'm back in for a few hours on Stephen's Day so there's no chance of me getting over.

Most of the people I know from work are heading home so it will be a lonely one for me. At least I get to devour all the food myself. So there is at least one positive.

I'm actually working 2-10 Christmas day. I work with people with disabilities so for now so it's a lovely job. Christmas day will be easy considering I've just got to cook a Christmas dinner but I'll miss my family loads. They're all going to my cousin's wedding tomorrow so I really miss home. Essentially, as fantastic as my job and friends are here, I'll miss home a lot because I just want to see my family.

My favourite character in Happy Endings was Max. Think of that what you will.

Atleast you're on the same time zone... Try skyping from east coast Australia Christmas Day :(

Second Christmas away from home (first for girlfriend)..

Going to Fiji for a week with my girlfriend on Monday. Back in Brisbane 23rd December and going to an all you can eat Christmas buffet at a hotel in Brisbane Christmas Day so I guess we'll manage! Will never be the same as snow/cold weather and a great Christmas meal with all the family and new additions but I can't go home so will have to do! :)

Exactly! Christmas away from home will never count but I hope it'll do. I very much hope the forthcoming weird weather conditions here don't prevent me from going home but they may well do.

I would never trade Christmas Day at home with all the family for anything :)

You'll be kept busy Christmas Day with work/cooking so don't be worrying about it too much...

I won't be worrying about it a huge amount but I'll still be mad that I'm missing the full spectacle.

My family consists of my dad and my brother.

At the moment my dad is critically ill in hospital and probably won't be here for Christmas. Knowing that you're going to be alone really sucks

That's really sad Lexie - I've been there.

Going home for the few days before, but coming back up to spend the rest with my boyfriend and his family. Yeah I don't get on that great with my family, but sure ill be there for a while anyway. It'll be weird being at someone else's house for Christmas

Spending actual Christmas here in the UK with outlaws and then over to Ireland on the 28th for a week, cannot wait! :D

First Christmas away from home this year! And I'll be working from 7-21:30, the fiancé will be sitting at home alone. We're gonna have our Christmas Day on the 26th.

Not only will I not be home, my younger brother has gotten a job in the Alps so he'll be away too! It'll be the first time ever we're not all together for Christmas, I'm more upset over how sad my mammy is about it! :(

Go for a walk on Princes Street very early on Christmas day, somewhere shy of twilight and dawn. The city will be all for you. Just you, your thoughts, and the shadow of that magnificent castle overhead.

Christmas comes and goes, people overeat and overdrink and be merry. And that is good. And repeatable. But you forget about it soon after.

But you will never forget that solitary walk at dawn on Christmas morning in Edinburgh!

Nurse. More than 12. Times like this make me question my career choice!

Haven't been home for Xmas since 2010. Not really an issue for me though tbh. Once I'm where my wife is I'm grand

Working over it, but plan to atleast be at home either Xmas Eve/Day night, or both if I can. Will be a 60km comute each way, but hey its xmas, will hopefully be only half days, and roads should be quiet.
