So trying to make my mind up on a car. Budget of up to 2k. So (petrol) corollas and civics are said to be very reliable and give good mpg, 40 - 45 mpg. Which is good.

Are they better lower cost per mile if doing 20 - 25 k mile a year(90% motorways) to diesels? If not what diesel would you suggest over them? Skoda Octavia? Are golfs passats ect exactly the same engine and reliability? Focus/ Mondeo? Peagout 406? other?

    Thanks.

Everyone wants cheap and frugal diesels, which makes finding a good one for a 2k budget a tall order imo. But your mileage is high enough to justify it. I reckon you might have to think outside the box a bit to get a diesel that hasn't been ragged. Everyone thinks of Octavias/Golfs/Passats when they think of diesels in your price range. Which make good ones hard to come by.

Tbh with that budget it may be just safer to go petrol. There is loads of posters on here that can tell you more about the corolla but certain model corollas do seem to be bulletproof and do decent mpg. You will buy a nice petrol corolla or similar for 2k where as most (not all) diesels at that money will be rough out and in some cases actually cost you more to run due to higher maintenance costs.

Your 2k will probably go a lot further buying a petrol car over a diesel one.

With a 2k budget I wouldn't even consider a diesel as at that price they will be high mileage ropey buckets.

A 1.5iLs EK3 civic salon/hatch will do mid 40's all day long on a motorway run do long as you don't rag the hell out of it.

If you are doing that kind of mileage, you would probably make a significant saving by driving a diesel.

Like Alanstrainor said, second hand VW and Toyota diesels are very popular in this country. One in your price range is could have very high mileage.

You probably would get a reasonable Peugeot 406 for that money, maybe with some change out of your €2k. Take a look at Mazda 6.

If you're doing 90% motorway you'll regret getting a small petrol. You'll have no comfort having to half cane it every day and it'll guzzle fuel. You'd be better off getting a decent sized petrol for the driving you're doing.

Good find, mileage looks suspiciously low for such an old car though?
