Im currently thinking of buying a jeep for myself and I'm wondering about commerical tax. I come from a farm but my brother has his van already commerical taxed using the family herd number and I don't think I'm allowed use it. A friend who has a herd number says I can use his as he has a car only.
    1. Can I use my friends herd number with his consent and do we need to fill out any forms to do so?
2.If I can't use my friends how many vehicle can be taxed with just one herd number??

    Any help greatly appreciated

I don't think that there is any law which states that you can't have 2 commercial vehicles on a farm. If the vehicle is going to be used in connection with this herd number then there is no reason not to use the number you have.

There is no limit, a farm could have as many commercial vehicles as are required to run the business.

We have two taxed using the same herd number on the declaration slip.

very often people just put down there PPS number instead of a VAT number, fill out the form with their occupation and there isn't a problem.

Get it stamped and signed at a Garda station and then hand it into the tax office when taxing it. The Guard is only witnessing your declaration, to see that you are signing it, and the person in the tax office doesn't even read it, they just want to see you have it filled out and signed.

Here's Goods Only Declaration form RF111A:
    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF111A_en.pdf

This is the form the OWNER of a vehicle signs to legally declare that the vehicle is to be used in the course of THEIR business or trade.

What I can recall is that you need to use your pps to indicate that you need it for commercial reasons. They closed the loop a few years ago. Yourppswill should that you have income from farming or as a sparky or whatever.

Ya but my brother had 2 vans in his name and one was used by my younger brother who had attended Agricultrual college and when they started clamping down on commerical tax in the last few yrs they were questioning why my brother had 2 vans commerical taxed and we had to private tax one and its my 1st commerical vehicle i will own if i buy this yoke bcos it will be €1000 private and that aint going to be the case.

what will you be using the van for?

if using it privately you could have issues with insurance in the event of an accident, or even with an over strict gu***a checkpoint

all you really need is a tax clearance cert which is just a form you fill out and send to revenue and about a week later yoou get the cert which everyone is entitled to and no problem getting.

theres no big deal you can say you work in any trade and have a commercial vehicle

Depends on the insurance company, some are over 25 to 70, others are over 25 with no upper limit. Another option is to have them named on the policy.
