Wine prices in Ireland

Whats going on in with wine prices at the moment?. How come a bottle of wine is €6.33 in one shop ,and the same wine is €11.00 in another shop down the road. I'm talking about well known supermarkets. Some shops seem to be able to offer great deals when it suits them.
With all the new taxes on wine, how can a shop sell wine cheaper that ever?
Are they selling at cost ?,to get the punters in?.

This is about the practice in the UK but probably appliies here as well. There the value of the actual wine in a cheap bottle is about 20 pence.

What I find strange ,is that a wine is cheaper than it ever was before even with new added taxes on wine.

If you pay more than say 6 or 7 quid for a bottle of wine then you are a mug. I only drink New Zealand sauv Blancs nowadays and have tasted many different bottles from 50 quid to 4 quid and I never could tell much difference to be honest.

I drink the NZ sauv blanc whatever's on offer at around 6 quid a bottle. They are all fine.

I hardly ever buy wine but glancing at the prices in the aisles I get the impression that they are not much different in the overall than two years ago.

Despite €1 and then 50 cent increases in duty being imposed in the last two budgets.

That should have put the prices up by more than €2 in the shops. Did that happen or are the shops playing around with prices so much that nobody knows what is going on?

It's hard to find anything decent for less than 9-9.50 euro now really I reckon. Damn true about shopping around. What's 12+ in one place is often be 9 in another.

A nearby store did a nice portuguese Tagus Creek red for 8.99 in 2012 and it went up to 9.99 this year and since the budget it's gone up to 11.49. Wtf. A 2.50 hike in under a year. That's that one out.

This is this month's pricing at the NH State Liquor Store. The stores are State owned and are tax free. The State makes enough profit selling at these prices and eases the taxpayer's burden. Cheers! I see my 5 litre box has been reduced to $11.99 so will buy a few tomorrow. That works out at 8.73 euros or 1.32 euros per 750ml bottle. And it is great stuff.

But that is your taste. A poorly made blend wine tastes just like that to me. A well made one vineyard wine tastes like heaven to me and is worth paying the extra.
Does that make me a mug? No, it just means I have different taste to you.

A bottle of wine is literally duty and vat. There is about €4,5 of duty on a bottle of wine and then you add vat at 23%. My Italian friend buys wine a particular bottle at home in Italy for €3 and its €13,5 here.

If you buy a €6 wine it's just tax but a €12 bottle is fair superior because you actually paying for the wine

Actually below cost in some instances. Competition for customers spend is intensive. You only have to look at what the supermarkets (Aldi, Dunnes, Super Valu etc) are doing. They are in effect trying to buy to your xmas shopping.

The demand for whiskey and brown spirits generally has soared globally driven by India mainly. since it takes a minumum of 3/4 years to age the most basic whiskey and supply is not meeting demand - the price is increasing.

Here's a Guardian article on the subject of half price wine deals, how the profit is shared and up/down pricing strategies at play:
Supermarket wine sales: wine rack or wine racket?
We also talked to industry insiders – including the former head of wine at Sainsbury's, who says many of the promotions are manufactured. Shoppers, he says, are being told a £5 bottle is "half price" when it was never worth £10. We found that even after a "half price" reduction, shoppers are sometimes paying more than they were being charged just a few months earlier.

I'd rather not drink wine than drink some of the muck listed here- no offence OP but I'd prefer 1 bottle of good wine than 3 litres of cheap commercial wine any day

I worked for a company that sell wine to restaurants and they would to make 50cent on a €6 bottle of house wine! The difference in quality between a €6 and €8 bottle is massive.

This might not apply to you given I don't know where you live but....

there's this place called Newry....(see also Strabane, Enniskillen etc)

...it's handy for alcohol at decent prices. ;)

they have 4 euro wine in tesco atm, in white red and rosé. Me and my friends were talking about this and seeing as alcohol is already taxed to ****, and the fact they slapped another euro tax on it the last budget...

How in god's name do they make their money back?

The following may come as a bit of a shock to your sensitive palate. In blind tastings taken place in Paris, San Fran and Paris again - over the past 30 odd years - Californian wine by Mondavi, Gallo etc. was consistantly given a higher marking than the indigenous vino.
The snobbery that comes with wine tasting is an attempt at one upmanship. I like bacon&cabbage. I don't have to take classes to be able to appreciate the taste (hint of acorn ......... pumpkinny ...... earthy flavour ....... tastes of pig).
Have been drinking wine a few times a week for over 40 years (7 of those in France and another 4 in the Moselle region of Germany) so I speak with personal experience.
I know some people that would not buy wine for less than $20 per bottle. So their appreciation of wine is in the price list. I know some people that will not drink boxed wine, some that will not drink out of screw-tops, and undoubtedly some people will not drink the newly arrived canned wine (good God what is the world coming to!)
So, rather than savour the tastes, they become trapped by their preconceived ideas ........... which will affect their wiring which in turn will affect their taste buds.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgement_of_Paris_(wine) can be browsed while swirling a nice robust Burgundy :)
    Bottoms up! :)

"I love wine – most people on here (or on my facebook page) know that. But this fact is gross enough to even make me reconsider it! When grapes are harvested by machine for wine making, the machine shakes the grapes off the vine. But this also means that insects, birds and basically anything else in the vine comes off too. Cheap wine makers don’t generally sort the grapes before pressing, so all of that extra stuff goes into the wine. Expensive makers (fortunately?) have sorting tables, and can remove up to 99% of the MOG (material other than grapes). That means that 1% or more of the juice in the wine is probably dead animals. The author of this story has even seen dead mice in the wine press."

^ This quote and the image here: http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2011/11/11/the-false-promise-of-cheap-wine/

Not much information on the origin of cheap wine. If we are really drinking 20 pence worth of wine, why is it so cheap?

Perhaps this might tempt your very delicate palate:" Aldi champagne for the same price of just under a tenner – the taste of which just happened to beat a £130 bottle of Veuve Clicquot" .......... this week in London.

For the full story how Aldi also beat Fortnum & Mason and Harrods hamper hands down at blind tastings.

Personal choices in wine is very subjective.
They must be doing something right as they are a phenomenally successful company ....... top selling wine in Britain. If you don't like fruity flavour - it's not for you. Diageo don't buy into bad stuff.
