Garda car boxing m50?

Passed what I thought was a car boxing exercise m50 today by two Garda jeeps southbound past Tallaght exit. Seems they had boxed about 20 cars and the other jeep backed up the rest of the traffic.

Is this the latest fun and games ?

How can 2 jeeps box in 20 cars?

By driving in the overtaking lanes

Seen this a few times on the M50 and N7. Basically the Gardai need to control the traffic flow to prevent a pile-up as there's a hazard or lane closure ahead.

What they do is take two marked cars that straddle lanes 1-2 and 2-3 respectively. Full blues are on and they slowly reduce speed from 100 km/hr to 20 km/hr. Then depending on what lane they need to shut (e.g. lane 3) the car in between 2-3 will put itself across lane 3 and stop with the car in lane 1-2 putting itself a little further up across lane 2.

You end up with two marked cars, fully lit that funnel cars into lane 1, the existing traffic backlog then filters in a controlled fashion into lane 1 and onwards.
