Just been admiring The Wanderer's pictures at Cherryville Jct got me wondering, what's the advantage of the pocket wagons over the 40 foots that were there previously?

They are able to accommodate higher boxes.

Anyone know why they're barred from certain lines? Are they just not passed on them or is it something else?

They were banned on some lines with older style points installed as the wheelbase of the CPWs are longer than the locking bars on the points which in theory would allow the point blades to move as the CPWs cross them causing potential for derailments. As far as I know all those points have since been replaced by newer ones.
