beamer turbo options?

    im considering buying a 3 series in the near future ,e36 or e30, to tidy up and then modify the hell outta (im messing around with old bangers atm to get some exp.)
    im considering a turbo of some sort but really im clueless about the variations ,sizes? styles? pressures?etc., and how they effect performance
    im not looking for any significant gains and id like to keep it reasonably cheap (cheap in terms of turbo of course.)
    focusing more on reliability than performance as this turbo is mainly for educational purposes.
    could this be a bad idea? am I in way over my head with this idea?

    EDIT: also i have the impression that turbos aren't solely performance enhancers? I heard they can improve fuel consumption ? is this true

    There is a company in germany that make turbo kits for the 318is e36. Cost 800 euros in parts. Will give you about 220hp.

    wow! would that just be that turbo itself or does that include intercooler,manifold, various valves ,etc.
    and im assuming the intial set up and tuning would cost a good bit extra?
    plus turbo supporting mods will be needed all over the car to handler that extra power, right?

    Why turbo? Spend your cash wisely, get an e36 2.8i, stick a 2.5i inlet manifold on and you`ll be at 220bhp easy.

    EDIT: Turboing beemers always was mapping issue. Scarcity of successful mappers afair.

    as i mentioned in my post its for educational purposes , not performance.

    its more of a track car
    and turbo or not your paying at least 3 grand a year for insurance and 800 for tax , its not worth it imo.

    Also i was asking if turbos can improve things other than just power e.g fuel consumption

    Omex ecu. About €600. Linky
    Garrett GT28 (rough guess on the turbo required for the size of the engine). About €1100. Linky

    Now you need to dick with the engine for it to accept boost. So uprated pistons, rods, head work, map sensors, injectors. As well as manufacturing a manifold to suit. Lot's of €

    Then you need to map it. More €€€



    First, make sure the car is well maintained. Sit down and do some research on what you'd like to do. Assess the costs and complexity.

    Consider supercharging if you're after more ponies

    I believe the m50b25 takes well to turboing with the being well able to take some boost with just arp bolts. That engine also is quite easy to fit to a e30 :D

    I'm sure it does take well to a turbo.

    Part list just off the top of my head.

    -Up rated fuel pump
    -Larger injectors
    -Fuel pressure regulator (rising rate usually a good idea)
    -Ecu
    -Turbo
    -Exhaust Manifold
    -Custom down pipe.
    -Intercooler
    -Intercooler pipe work
    -Additional sensors if needed
    -gaskets
    -Fittings and fixings
    -Oil lines to feed turbo
    -Water lines to feed turbo.
    -Mapping

    Maybe
    -Up rated radiator
    -Oil cooler


    good ideas:
    breaks big ones.
    Tyres good ones
    Suspension and handling, shocks springs, arbs.


    It is all do-able but will take time and money. Id sit down price it up in excel.

    Then id weight the cost against a later model m3/m5 motor swap. With an off the shelf swap kit.

    Then id price an M3

    I hate to think of how much money I spen(d/t) on cars on substantially less complicated projects.
