Have a family member that just bought a site and is about to embark on a self build project. I'm looking to get them a gift/present. I was thinking of getting self build magazine subscriptions but has anyone got better suggestions?

Yes. Tell them to get a builder. Its actually cheaper now and it will not cost less than self build!! Its beyond me how some pen pusher thinks they can walk in and do somebody else job in there spare time! The next 2 years of there life will b abosulote hell and when finished they will probably hate there home. Always walking around wishing they done it different! ! Have a nice day

Who's to say that the self-builder isn't far more competent than your average builder at managing budgets, deadlines, people, equimpent and materials? I know plenty of people who would be more than capable of managing a self-build.

Anyway, this might be a good present OP. http://hitechniques.ie/VirtualBrochure.aspx?p=780

I don't have anything to say about that website as I've never used it, but the laser distance meter is really great bit of kit and comes in handy in so many situations.

The home bond manual. Or an airtight course or energy efficiency one.

Seriously - this! A really good hammer will last forever, and it will be used every day on a self build! It was the first tool I bought when about to start building my house, and I nearly cried when I lost it (but got it returned to me a couple of weeks later ! )
