A very common occurrence. It will get found out eventually & they can backdate your bills based on average for your previous readings & you get hit with a backlog of bills.

Upto you, but you should report it. It always nice to think you get one up on the big boys, but they usually win in the end!

    Say nothing

It is very tempting alright. You could wing it for a bit & say the property was empty for a while, but there is a risk.
Once the boiler is serviced by an RGI, it will be gas rated & the issue will be realised right away then. The RGI will then have a responsibility to report it.

True but do they need to? There could be many arguments made but I am not sure of the legalities of it, do they need to prove the exact usage if you cannot prove the property was unoccupied & a known faulty meter?

I would hate to see the OP landed with a large backlog bill & an ongoing battle with their supplier over getting forum advice. It is why I would air on the side of caution.

Im not trying to suggest they do anything underhand, Id certainly be putting money away, but Id have thought the onus would be on the Gas supplier to prove rather than the person at the property, Ive debated at times to shut the heating down myself except for the very cold and stick on a fleece and I would except the other half wouldnt allow it and its not practical with a small child, but in the past when renting with others have had agreements not to use the heating at all, spent more time in pubs then though.

bucking right it is, they will try the bully route but at the end of the day they can prove nothing, it would be windows open if it was my manor. ;)

Completely agree. It's really going to down to the individual. The issue or argument that the supplier will have is that of course people can not turn on the heating or even stop using their gas cooker. The difference there is your meter hadn't stopped recording usage. The OP's has stopped recording, so there will be an argument. If no usage was the choice of the occupant, why would they not cut the supply as they would be getting standing charges, etc.

There is no right or wrong answer here, just down to the OP's opinion really, but they should be aware of any potential risks. It might be worth for the OP to contact their supplier, not giving their details or GPRN & ask the hypothetical question, "what happens if....?"

This is now a moral question and as there are to many gentlemen with loose morals I'm going to knock it on the head.

OP your Meter is defective the above posts give the pros and cons for reporting it, for what happens next the choice is yours.
