voip and eircom efibre question?

    Quick question, anyone know if eircom efibe 50mb would be sufficient for
    20 voip users?

    You should allow 100kbps symmetrical per concurrent call. So as mentioned above, that should be more than enough.

    Don't forget to setup QoS.

    thanks, is it true that its pps that matters when using voip and not the amount of bandwidth? And how would i go about testing the quality of my line?

    By pps I'm guessing you mean Packets per second?

    In a nutshell, ideally for VoIP you should have a low ping (should be lower than 100ms, ideally less than 50ms). Post a speedtest.net test here and I can let you know if you're connection is suitable.

    The amount of bandwidth does matter too. As mentioned above, as a guideline I would always allow for 100 kbps per concurrent call. That is more than enough for a standard G.711 call.

    To be sure, you can always plug a phone or use a Softphone and headset to another phone to check if its ok. Though a speed test with ping results should be a good indicator.

    speed test showed 40 download, 5 upload and ping of 20ms. i guess this seems ok? But now to figure out why calls are dropping and general performance is sketchy:) and sorry yes packets per second.

    That should be fine. Ping is good enough for VoIP. Who is your VoIP [edit] provider? Is this an issue with one specific provider or all providers? Are you using a phone system in house or are you just using desk phones connecting to your provider?

    all with eircom, this is first provider. no phone system is in london, business in munster. They are using softphones (eyebeam).

    Try connecting directly to a provider from a softphone over here (in Munster) and check to see if it is a ln internal network issue. If you can make and receive calls perfectly, I would point the finger at the phone system or connection to the phone system in London.

    I have 22 users set up on a 28 down/8 up eircom connection with around 28ms pings to local speedtest server.

    No problems at all. Saying that it's unusual to have more than 8 incoming and outgoing at the same time.
