MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

Hi guys, I am a computing student and after years of dodgy laptops I am finally deciding to upgrade to Mac. My question is simple, Air or Pro? My thought was always the Pro due to the built in CD Drive. But having learnt that newer Pro's have not got this built in, I am considering just going for the Air. Other than the added ports, of which adapters can be bought, what is the advantages the Pro has over the Air?

If I ended up going for the Air I'd be maximising the memory, as I use VM's but I also use exterior hard drives so this isn't much of an issue!

    Thanks in advance!

Do a search, its a question that gets asked over and over again.

One of the lads here at work just bought the Pro 1TB SSD and can't get over how good it is!!

He has friend working in Apple so he got 17% off of it and claimed the VAT off through his company.

I searched. All the questions I found relate to differenciating Mac Book Pros or new vs refurbished. Could not find anything on Air vs Pro

May be getting this discount myself

What exactly are you using the MacBook for, OP? It really depends on what you require from it to help decide which model you should go for.

Using it for everything basically. Coding, word docs, spreadsheets, just general assignments. Final year assignment next year so will be doing some 3D modeling, and other prototype mock ups. bit of sound mixing and recording as well as a hobby

Can't you tell yourself from the specs which would be more suitable?

Just get the Air with 8GB RAM and as much internal storage as you can afford.

no matter which one you choose avoid the retina display model …. I've had the screen changed three times in 12months - asked apple to give me a refund and they've refused claiming its over the 12months.

laptop was over 3K new last year - have 2 options goto small claims court (limit of 2K) or goto a solicitor - which will cost me money and probably won't get a full refund.

And to get a contrasting opinion. I've had my RMBP for 18 months and couldn't be happier.

how often do you use it ? if you don't mind me asking

mine was being used mon-fri 9-9ish ….got dead pixels in the screen multiple times (common enough fault on macbook pro retina screens).

Don't get me wrong - I'm still a mac fan …but when you spend 3K on a laptop you'd expect a bit better customer service, they've left me no choice but to either get a solicitor or go small claims court (small claims court is limited to 2K)

Every day for 12-15 hours. Weekend for long enough also. I too got a specced up rMBP, had a yellowish tint from the display at the start but it went away after a while. No dead pixels as of yet. Also got the Applecare to prevent things like your situation from happening
