    Hi,
Posting this in After Hours cos I'm not sure where to post. Mods any ideas ?

Twice in the last week I've received a call from a number starting with 443531679. The 1st time I was out so missed the and last night I didn't answer.

I googled the number and it seems to be a Swiss mobile.

I don't know anyone in Switzerland. I suspect this is a scam.

Anyone else received these calls ?

It's probably the old "Hello, we're from Microsoft! We've detected a problem with your PC!" caper. They're getting "cleverer" now and showing up as calling from places like Egypt as well as Eastern Europe.

I thought that at first but AFAIK area codes in the UK start with 01 or 02.

The Nigerian prince who emailed you a while ago was disappointed you ignored him, so he got the manager in the Swiss Bank he has all his funds to ring you directly.
You really should call back to arrange your share of the monies.

She quoted a phone number, not a Company Registration number.

Using IP telephony, scammers can and do send false Caller ID numbers.

Which is, IIRC illegal in itself. As would be "withheld" numbers, if I had my way. If you're not prepared to identify yourself I'm not answering, and you can piss off.

I got calls from that number three times one week and then my whole family got taken out.

TFIs I think it was and now they all live with him.

    Merry Christmas.

Sorry you got me before the ninja delete, I got slightly confused as 44 is the UK, but 353 is Ireland and 1679... would be central Dublin, so not 100% sure but likely it will be a central Dublin number still.

That's the patent number for a heating chamber for running threads.

    apparently.

    44 is UK.

Why not just answer it?? It could be someone you know who is travelling maybe and doesn't want to, or can't use their Irish phone. There are plenty of reasons why someone would call from a different number than their own.

People are becoming paranoid - I blame the Daily Mail.

Yeah someone you know calling you but refusing to leave a voicemail - unlikely.

If they're not leaving a voicemail, it can be:
    1. completely unimportant (and yet they call back again?)
    2. a scam
    3. a legit call centre looking to sell you something

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 297 ✭✭Slaygal

I've just checked bt.com no UK area code starts with 3, it's either 01 or 02.
    No voicemails are being left.

I shouldn't receive sales calls as I've opted not to receive them.

The only other option I can think of is market research.

    That's what I meant actually :-)

Anyway, I don't see anything good coming out of that. I know it's really tempting to find out, but I doubt it's worth it.

    Answer is.

Say: "It's done... but there's blood everywhere !!"

    and hang up.

Just ignore it and it will eventually stop. I have UPC ringing me every few days and I just ignore it. You would think they'd get the hint but they're persistent buggers. They don't give up easily.
