Im driving a 05 diesel ford focus estate, around a month ago a red engine management light came on the dash,my car had very poor pick-up and wouldn't go past 3 on the rev counter,no matter how much i puched down on accellerator, got checked out and was told it was a blocked fuel filter, the mechanic changed it but didn't sort the problem, stil no pick-up,any ideas would be greatful, dont want to spend another €70 for nothing.

Modern common rail turbo diesels engines are covered in a web of sensors, many of which can cause the problem you describe, there are also possible mechanical issues that can cause it. However if an engine check is on then your first port of call is to have a diagnostic check carried out, this will tell the mechanic what caused the engine light to come on in the first place and allow him to diagnose the problem. Randomly changing components in a vain hope it sorts the problem is just bad mechanics full stop.

Did the mech read fault codes and make her/his decision this way?
    Or was it a hunch?

Best thing to do is to get the fault codes read to find out what they refer to.

Before you do that, perhaps disconnect the connector to the Mass Airflow Sensor and see if there is a difference.

If there isn't any improvement, then that's probably the cuprit. It either needs cleaning or replacement. They do cost quite a bit though.

Following that, if you could get the EGR valve cleaned, that could improve things.

But best to get the codes read first.
