If memory serves, and there's no guarantee there, the 1988 competition had approx. 16,000 applicants for 1,000 places to be filled over the following 3 years.

I suspect that ratio, pro rata, will be blown out of the water this time. Good luck to all who genuinely want it!

I believe you're right, speaking to my uncle who got in in that competition and is still a member today, he said they hadn't recruited in a number of years back then too and that it was a tough campaign, but this time round will most likely be tougher as they're taking on fewer and probably more will apply... Apparently the PAS have reduced their estimation of the amount of applicants to under 20000 but this is just a rumour I heard
