    Hi

I'm about to tax my car which is in arrears since July.

Will I be charged to monthly penalty since July or will just from October since the penalty was introduced?

    Thanks!

Since July. The arrears weren't only introduced in October, they just removed the ability to retrospectively declare it off the road.

I understand I'll have to pay arrears back to July. But a penalty (price based per litre) was introduced in October as far as I know which for my car works out at €57 extra per month. So on top of backdating my tax, do you mean I'll have to pay the €57 a month on top of my backdating?

    Rates are here

    That's what you'll pay.

Arrears were always payable, only difference now is you actually have to pay them.

I think the arrears column is simply telling you how much a single month would cost when you are backtaxing. it's not an penalty charge on top.

yep. you pay a tenth of the annual rate per month of arrears, no penalty otherwise
