Saorview Recorder - advice needed

    Hi,

I am considering buying a Saorview recorder. But before I do, I have a few questions:

At the moment, we have a Saorview approved TV with a freeview box for BBC, UTV, Channel 4 etc. I want to buy a box that will record the terrestrial channels.

    1) The only Saorview Recorder I can find from an electrical store is the Walker 6500 twin tuner in Power City:

    http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-WP6500&pages=&prod=WP6500&brands=WALKER&image=

Does anyone have this box? Is it good for what I want? If not, what are the alternatives?

    2) I have a friend who had an old TV (not saorview approved) with a freeview box. When analogue was switched off, he bought a Saorview box. But the 2 boxes would not work together. He was advised by Saorview to buy a combi box.

Given that I want to use a saorview recorder with a freeview, will the 2 boxes work together? Note I only want to record terrestrial channels. Would I be able to record, say, RTE2 while watching BBC?

    3) This may be a stupid question, but is there such a thing as a combi recorder box?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

I own the Walker Saorview PVR, as does my brother. It's the only Saorview approved PVR on the market at the moment. We purchased when they were launched at the beginning of the year.

We've had lots of problems with the box such as failed recordings, unable to series link, losing channels etc. If there was another approved PVR on the market I wouldn't recommend this one but we're stuck with it for now.

Some of the FreeviewHD PVRs work well with Saorview and Freeview I believe based on posts here. Someone mentioned here recently that a particular FreeviewHD pvr will allow you to record programmes from both Saorview and Freeview at the same time with all channels in a single epg. Can't confirm which one and I'm not in a Freeview coverage area.

AFAIK Panasonic have a FreeviewHD PVR that records from both Saorview/Freeview all from one EPG. I have a Sony Freeview HD PVR but you can only timer record from one system at a time so I maually record when I want to record from both.

Humax HDR Fox T2 can record from either EPG but may lose out if it did not get the start signal to record, My Saorview recording is about 90% successful
what I do is set up a manual recording for 1 minute about 10 minutes before the main recording for serial recording to work successfully as the EPG and CRID being updated also it leave one of the tuner on Saorview.

This should do the job for you. I have the 2012 model version, DMRHW220 so unless Panasonic changed the software it will work perfectly for both SV and FV, seemless combined EPG that stays populated for both systems, sort programs as you want, series recording works for both SV and FV, records 2 progs at once, plus some other nice network features.

Can add an external USB drive to it for extra storage when your 500 GB limit is reached, although it can only be used with the machine it is registered to and not with a PC.

Only 2 issues for SV, teletext does not work and the detailed program description is not displayed when you press the Information button on the EPG.
Can't go wrong at that price, there is also a 1TB version plus a version with Blu ray player plus another version with BluRay \DVD disc recorder.

That is the only BluRay recorder on the market, great price considering the extra features if you want to make DVD or BluRay copies of programs.

Also available in Currys NI shops. Way too expensive in the South.

Ear to the Ground failed to record, due to two recording made earlier on FV channels so no update for CRID via SV to start the serial recording

Thanks for the advice & the links to products. I will try the Panasonic 130 model.

    Thanks!

I see that there is a 230 model with built-in wifi and a 1TB HDD (DMR-HWT230EB). Does anyone have experience with either the 130 or 230 to confirm that the Panasonic can handle Freeview and Saorview OK?

    Thanks again.
