Key snapped after locking the car in a supermarket car park tonight. How am I supposed to get another key for the car? The tax book is in the car so I can't get the chassis number...

The chassis number is on a plate that you can see through a small window in the bottom of the windscreen.

Great thanks. So do I just go to the local Ford dealer with the chassis number and they can produce a new key? Does it take long and what cost am I looking at?

I assume you would need some kind of document to prove you own the car, I mean some crook may as well just read off your number and go get a key?

Unfortunately I can't find the tax book. Would I still be able to get the key without it?

Did you the broken bit out? That proves you a least have that and backs up your story

I have the broken key. I'm just concerned that there is more codes on the tax book that I may need?

They normally just need the car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) which is a 15 digit number located at the bottom of the windscreen on the passenger side and car's reg number. Also bring some id in case they look for that.

Not sure you will be able to get in with the broken piece still in the lock anyway.

Is there a key slot on the passenger side? Some cars only have one on the drivers side.
If its a hatchback you could get in via the boot I suppose.

You need to bring the broken key to a locksmith. They'll sort you out on the spot.

Just talking to my cousin, he works in a Ford garage, is it a remote central locking key or just standard key?

Thanks very much! It's just a standard key.

Thanks very much! It's just a standard key.

He said for the standard key it will need to be reprogrammed to the car for the central locking, ID will be required and reg plate number but no log book, it'll be kept on file in the Ford system the name and address of who bought a spare key. Thats in a Ford garage, he said it could differ in an independent garage
