Does anyone know why this keeps happening?

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum, I am USELESS with technology and computers...

Anyway, a really annoying pop-up keeps appearing on my screen, every 4th-5th page I visit, it's not specific to any sites, it remains blank, and won't disappear until I click the 'x'. Obviously it's not the end of the world but it's getting so annoying! My laptop is getting old (3-4 year old Vaio).

I use Firefox and un-installed Explorer because I hated it.

Sounds like some form of adware or malware on your laptop. If you go to the Firefox menu (orange button,top left) and then 'addons -> extensions' and remove any suspicious entries such as toolbars or other programs you do not recognise. You should also run some anti-spyware/malware utilities. The following are free and generally do the job:

Malwarebytes Anti-malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
SUPERAntiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
AdwCleaner: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
