Taxing a car that was declared off the road

I declared my car off the road starting end of Oct for a period of 3 months
now that I want to use it I would like to tax it.

I thought I could just go on line and tax it from beginning of this month Dec 13
    i.e. the first of Dec

unfortunately the system doesn't have any option other than pay the arrears for the month of Nov 13 and tax car going forward for 3, 6 or 12 months starting Dec 13

Has anyone experienced the same or is the only way to have this resolved is a call into motor tax office ?

I was under the impression that once declared off road the only requirement was to tax car from the month you wanted to use it ?

you can't do it online. Either do it by post on an RF100A or go into the Motor Tax Office.

Currently you will have to tax it from 1st December only

I thought you had to declare off road for 3 months minimum?

Minimum period of declaration is 3 months, but you could put the car back on the road the following day by taxing it if you wanted.

But if you want to return to the road within the 3 months, does that not mean that you forfeit the off Road declaration and need to pay tax for all months. That is what I would have thought but I've no idea if that is what they are enforcing or not. A 3 month period doesn't make any sense otherwise.

The car must have current tax before you declare it off the road
the option is 3, 6 or 12 months you can declare it off the road, before the period of non use expires you can extend the period by 3, 6 or 12 months and you can keep doing this if you so wish... no problem.

Now when you want to reuse the car during the period the car is declared off the road you simply taxed it from the current month of use.

This is how I understood the system to work..

except when I go to tax it, its seeking back tax for last month. its expensive enough with out paying back tax for a period declared off the road. wonder if its a case that cars declared off the road aren't able to tax on-line without paying the back tax that is calculated with interest.

I al;ready told you, you can't (as yet) tax a SORD vehicle online. I suspect they haven't devised a method to add the SORD to their computer and have to do it manually. When I taxed my SORD Focus by post they phoned me and told me a I'd have to pay arrears. They didn't know it was SORD and had to check manually

No that isn't the case. Taxing the car cancels the SORD.You can tax it at any time within the SORD period (I've done it twice already)

Going to the tax office isn't really an option due to work.

I've attempted to tax car from beginning of month 1/12/2013
but the system includes arrears of 180 euro for Nov

I'm thinking either the system can't handle it or that my car isn't recorded as off the road. Although I have email confirming it is.

Just my luck that something is amiss

did you do it on line or at the tax office ?

    Yu can't do it online.....

print out a RF100A and post it in, you don't need to go in. Make it clear in a coverig note that the car is SORD, a copy of the receipt would be a good idea

Yes you can, I did it on line but they won't do it for everyone, they particular enjoy victimising some people

Had to chuckle to myself when I read back up the thread :)

Nothing easy.... I'll print off the RF100A

I presume I don't need to pop into Garda Siochana little house and ask him to stamp it like in the old days before this new fangled SORD came in..

nope, there is a new version which doesn't even have a space for the stamp

I doubt it would matter if you put in the old one

Ok so you can return car to the road at any stage during a sord period.
Why even mention a 3 month minimum period then. I guess it's to stop people who might be going off the road for 1 month or so from sording the car when in fact it appears they should be doing.

Reading through this thread makes me laugh.

Once again the Irish copy a system from our neighbours but still manage to balls it up completely - confusion, paper forms and postage in this day and age because they've only half-assed implemented their online system is a bad joke!
Maybe it's deliberate though.. the whole SORD thing here is such a mess, maybe they figure people won't bother, or will do it wrong so they can squeeze more tax out of them as a result.

Warms my heart to see my taxes at work

the whole "online" system is arse about face. Putting it back on the road online should be easy but declaring it off the road online? How could they ever prosecute someone for false declaration without a signature? You just say "wasn't me" end of case.
