NCT retest

I'm due to have a retest on the NCT. Will the only things they test in the retest be the things it failed for the first time? For instance if there is a warning on the dash about something would they consider this a fail in the retest even if it wasn't an issue with the first test? Thanks.

Depends on the warning light, if its an abs light or something they might fail!
To be honest it depends on the lad that tests it for I, if he wants to be a knob or not

    Completely disregard the above advice.

They can only look at what they initially failed you on when it comes to a retest.

I have often seen threads here that would beg to differ allthough they would be a full retest I presume. .

Totally untrue, so if u fail on a full beam light, go get it replaced and on the way to the centre your dip beam goes! Are u saying he has to pass you?

Or if you fail on a nearside front tyre, if u swap that tyre with a back one then he will pass you????

    I very much doubt it

    No only.
    1. They can also look at things which they couldn't test beforehand because it was impossible because thing which failed didn't work.

    2. They can look at things which might have changed once other thing which failed was repaired.

    3. And they can look at anything which might be a "fail dangerous", even if it passed first time.

    Examples:
    1. Car failed for blown dipped lights bulb only. Comes back for retest with new bulb, but then fails on dipped lights alignment, which couldn't be tested on original test.

    2. Car fails on wishbone balljoint being loose. Comes with new one, but this time fails on "slip test", as mechanic after fitting new wishbone, didn't bother to set wheel alignment.

    3. Car failed on loose steering. Comes fixed, but this time there is a major leak from brake line, and brakes barely work. Car is awarded "fail dangerous" status, even though loose steering had nothing to do with brakes.

Surely if something is an obvious fail they wouldnt let it though even if it passed the first time? For example if someone came in with a blown headlight which was working the first time around?

There is little provision for them to fail something which passed previously unless they deem it dangerous or the previous test was invalid for some reason. Dangerous means the car shouldn't be driven from the test centre and they will call the Gardaí if you ignore that advice. I don't know if they do all that for a failed bulb.

I don't think the tester is allowed to fail for that on retest, once it passed in original test.

What a truely wonderful system then... Car enters NCT center with obvious fail but they must pass it on a technicality. Utter bull**** if thats true.

I very much doubt that's the case, anyrhing can happen to a car in the 28days between a retest, If there is something completely obvious, no tester is gonna sign off on a car and say it is road legal

Well it looks like no one definitively knows or perhaps its a grey area.
