Canon - extension tubes (macro)

    Hi all,

As a gift, I am looking at extension tubes for a Canon 60D - for someone who only has an 18-200 lens. They are really only starting out and buying a macro lens isn't really an option at the moment - but perhaps the extension tubes would be something to give them an introduction into some macro shots?

I have never used/seen these - so am totally clueless. Any advice? Or where to buy?

    Thanks

Get them a second hand 50mm F1.8 Mk2 Prime lens, they will thank you for it.

its about the same price. adverts has afew for sale, and the canon range extension tubes are great but very expensive, find cheaper alternatives.

    That's Great,

I have the Canon and a set of unbranded extension tubes.

I managed to do this -->http://goo.gl/GhqxDG

Its handheld shot, but one thing I learn't is this way produces Crazy small Depth of Field (DOF).

To counter the DOF you need to Focus stack your pictures.

I use a the Magic Lanten software to stack my images.

Still learning, but I think its Tripod from here on in.

Here you are, these work great with a 50mm lens.

You can get cheaper tubes that do not have the autofocus connections too about €6. on Ebay

Would they be ok on the 18-200 also? Sorry, I'm a bit clueless on these!

There is a workaround to get a (slightly) better DOF. Put the lens on the camera and set the apature to something narrow. Then press the DOF Preview button. With the button pressed the blades will open. Keep the button pressed and detach the lens from the body. Keep the preview button pressed. Then just put your extensions on and attach the lens. The blades should remain open.
You'll probably still end up focus stacking but you'll have a slight improvement on the DOF.

Yes they will work with any lens but with different degrees of difficulty in focussing. Macro photography is a very fine art. The ideal is to have a fixed lens such as the 50mm.
Ebay probably won't supply them before Christmas at this stage. I can post you my cheapie Canon set so as you have the present in time for Christmas. Hardly ever used as I am a Nikon user
