Recruitment Agencies - Tricks and mis-leading applicants

    Recruitment agencies??

    Do you believe everything they tell you about jobs?
    Have you applied for jobs that don't even exist?

    What tricks have they played on you?

    Perhaps you work for an agency?

    I would be interested in hearing about any dodgy practices that you may have witnessed??

    (Apols if this has been brought up before)

    Recruitment agencies are sales people, they hound me every other day with calls.

    I understand it's their job, but don't believe everything they try to tell you,
    Especially as someone who is looking for work.

    They seem to be fairly ignorant in regards to signing up with them online . Never used one before but I'm guessing the best approach is to try and organise a meeting or something with an actual person & not an email responce . Is it best just to ring them & organise this ??

    It wouldn't hurt I suppose,
    A friend of mine recently got a job through an agency (which he ended up hating,) I wouldn't blame the agency, he was dying to get into a sales role and jumped into that one. It just didn't suit him.

    But regarding actually sitting down with them it can only help, my same friend had a sit down with them around the time and they where quite open to the idea.

    I've never worked with an agency, I've never had to. But from speaking to them on the phone on a regular basis, they are desperately trying to fill roles.

    I applied to a job advert that a company had posted itself in the newspapers and as a full time position. I made it through their initial screening test, then there was three very comprehensive interviews with the company's HR department. I then had to provide eight referees (yes eight) and finally complete a very thorough medical exam. Yesterday I got a phone call from HR saying that I had been successful but the job is through a recruitment agency and is just a contract position and I would be working for the agency and not the company, they never mentioned this at any stage in the interview process. I'm really annoyed over this because this agency had no input whatsoever in my pursuit of this position, I'm not signed up with them, I never had any contact with them ever, but somehow they will be getting 15% of the salary of a position I worked so hard to get. I'm really thinking of turning it down, but I really need this job. Has anyone any idea on what is going and why the company would do this, and what should I do. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Some companies do this because they can not always guarantee a permanent position,
    it's alot easier for them to pay an agency to pay you as they don't have to worry about putting you on their books and letting you go.

    I know it was alot of hassle and 15% is a very high cut, but if the job is as good as you say just take it for the experience alone. It can only benefit you.

    15% is actually a very low cut for an agency, particular if they're taking you on as an employee not a contractor. Actually I don't thing that will be the deal, as the agency would need to pay employer PRSI (around 11%) and annual leave is 8% - not to mention the cost of processing your payroll and covering the risk of employment disputes if things go wrong - as well as make a profit themselves. Well over 15% all up, most take more like 30%.

    I think you need to ask some more questions about the exact relationship with the agency, and whether they would expect you to be self employed.

    Thanks for the input theballz & Mrs OBumble. There is really not a lot left for me to consider, a 15% reduction in the salary means the position is not so attractive, plus as the theballz pointed the company gets to avoid any commitments that employing me a direct employee would entail. These are not the Job specs that was advertised and I feel the company should have been honest about this from the start, this effectively makes me wonder what else they could hold back in my dealings with them. Mrs OBumble, a 30% cut would have led me to tell them where to go on the spot. Thanks again

    There should be no reduction in salary. The agency cut is on top of your pay (employers pays 115% essentially). You interviewed for a job with X pay, that's what you should get. Anything else is just messing.

    Check if you would be an employee of the agency, or if they expect you to be a self-employed person (this would save them the employers prsi, but you may lose JSB entitlement).
