    oops http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2002-corolla-new-model-1-4-vvti/6096291

Probably get them down to 1600 if I bargain.

Corolla, golf, focus etc would all be decent cars. Trying to get one that isn't a total heap for 2k might be tricky though.

I would also recommend the 1.3 Mitsubishi lancer from 03-08. They are usually cheaper than the ones above and are a good reliable motor. I drove one for years and never had to put a penny into it aside from the usual service and a timing belt. The current owner hasn't had a moments trouble either (I know them well). Bland as hell but I'm guessing you are looking for a trouble free A to B car!

A Focus within that budget would be realistic. My first car was a Focus. 2000, 1.4, hatchback. Paid €950 if I recall. Had a lot of visual issues (rear number plate and front grill would fall off if you looked at them wrong, wing mirror was damaged/missing it's cover, etc.) so I splashed another 400-500 into it and it's never given any trouble at all.

Mechanically it's still fine. My dad uses it daily and never gives a single issue. The bonnet on it is noticeably faded, though. Wouldn't bother respraying it as the car's too old to justify the expense, but all in all, considering the money spent, it's needed nothing mechanically and is running fine 9 months later.

So It's always worth keeping an eye out (and having a mechanic that you trust!).

A corolla or 03 onwards lancers as has been mentioned above are both good cars. For build quality I'd have the corolla before a lancer though but the lancer is still a very reliable car and they are good value for money these days.

I'd be avoiding a golf though. The 16valve 1.4 engine is underpowered and soft.

I'd be avoiding a 1.4 focus too. While it's is more reliable than a golf it is also underpowered, especially compared to other 1.4s

Mazda looks nice, what do ye reckon would be a fair price to put an 03 1.2L Punto up on donedeal with 80,000 miles and NCT till March. Never gave a spot of trouble in two years. Would be looking to sell it quickly. Looking for something better and safer for motorway driving.
