Apologies if this is a basic question but curious to know why the Nexus 7 running vanilla android has an email client different to Gmail?

Is Gmail not the default email client for android?

Gmail is just for the Google account(s) signed in on your Android phone. This is also available on the Play Store.

Email is for POP3 / IMAP / Exchange accounts from anywhere else. Technically you can use Gmail with this too which is pointless of course because the official Gmail is excellent.

Neither are the "default" apps since they're separate from each other really. I use my Gmail app as normal and Email for my work Exchange account.

If Gmail can run POP3/IMAP/Exchange, why have a separate email client on the Nexus range? Would it not make sense from a business perspective for Google to to drive users towards Gmail and Google business Apps?

Not really. Gmail doesn't support enterprise level Exchange support like the default email client does.
The default email client supports various security features like certificates, lock-screen controls and remote wiping, push email support, etc..

They already do drive people towards it by making you have to use a Gmail account for your Play Store, YouTube, Google+, Maps etc. Gmail is easily Google's best feature, they have zero need to drive people to an obvious choice ;)

The inclusion of the rather basic Email app is just so they can say "We have an email app". I wouldn't see anyone moaning about it if it was removed for stock apps since their are a tonne of alternatives on the Play Store. Personally I'd love to see a nice new upgrade to it as well as migrating it to Play Store / Services.

Gmail is IMAP but with it's search functionality, labels and extras for labs - a standard app just wouldn't do, it needs something extra.
