The ICU is seeking applicants for the position of captain of the Open [men's] team for the 2014 Chess Olympiad, to be held in Tromsø, Norway between 1 and 14 August 2014. Applications should be submitted to the ICU Secretary secretary@icu.ie before 6 January 2014. Further details.

The successful candidate for the position of team captain must have a keen interest in and experience of international chess, good communication skills, and familiarity with the rules of chess and Olympiad tournament rules. The captain will not pick the squad, but will pick the team for individual matches; he/she must therefore have knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the leading Irish chess players, and must be able to work constructively with these players and bring out the best in them. He/She must be able to travel to Norway for the duration of the Olympiad.

The Olympiad organizers provide free board and lodging for the captain for the duration of the tournament, and the ICU will pay a contribution towards the captain’s travel expenses.

Olympiad team news

The ICU is pleased to announce the captains of the two teams which will play in the Olympiad in Tromsø in August. The Open team captain will be Pat Fitzsimons; the captain of the Women's team will be Gary O'Grady. The teams will be selected as soon as possible after the publication of the (final) January rating lists, and announced here as soon as the relevant people have been informed.
