    Often wondered about this,

    1. Does it just trip that circuit.
    2. Is there a big bang and flashes at the socket.

Generally the RCD trips in a very undramatic fashion.
A bit of an anticlimax really.

Do Electrical fires still happen these days, I know back in the 70s and 80s there were lots of adds about electrical fires, are they common these days with all the safetys and trip switchces?

    Stats for 2011 here

    http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/StatisticsandRegularPublications/FireandEmergencyServices/FileDownLoad,32450,en.xls

136 caused by wiring installation, 241 from faulty electrics equipment.

Trip switches cannot detect bad connections, and under rated cables.

    overall less fires...

there have been backward steps such as the open-halogen downlighter when improperly installed

dodgy or cheap electrical accessories and equipment still a problem
