    Hi all,
As the title suggests, how do you transfer ownership with the brown log books? Only ever done it with the newer forms.

    Thanks

Motor Tax office and a RF200.

Go to motortax.ie and click on "motor tax forms", you'll find it in there.

You might as well grab a RF150 if it's not going on the road straight away....

On the same topic, the car was originally one of my uncles, but we dont know which one. Is there a way of finding out?

Was it registered in Dublin? As local Motor tax office will have the registration details. I think only some people in DCC Motor tax office have access to old pre '86 system, as it took me a couple of tries to find someone who knew what I was talking about, but a phone call to them will get you on your way. Think Smithfield is best place to contact. I recently got a new brown book when I bought a vintage bike without documents, but had the previous owner details. I also filled out a lost document form, which had to be signed by Garda station. Cost €12. Alfo

Having looked back. Have you got the brown log book? Last owner will be in it. By the sound of it now (not outlined in the first post), you've lost it (or it's another separate case that's been lost), in which case there probably is another form (yes the RF134 this time) to fill in as much detail as you can to get a replacement issued.

I'm not 100%, but maybe it's a RF134 to be done first (request for replacement docs), followed by a RF200 to get change of ownership bit down.

I have the brown log book. However, the name on it is different to who the "expected" owner is. Could this mean that it was never transferred, or could the name just have been left off it?

It hasnt been on the road in about 5 years, but Ive recently purchased it. That shouldnt matter i thought, as once ownership changes, nobody is eligible for back tax??

Probably new owner didn't register the car in their name, because of liability for road tax, parking tickets etc. Usually brown book transferred on to new owner with the car, so onus on the old owner to inform the road tax people that it was no longer their vehicle and the new owner to update motor registration/motor tax office. Road Tax people will the person named in the book as the registered keeper.

Your liability only starts when you take ownership.

The last owner is the last name on the book that is date stamped by the MTO.

If you read the RF200, the sort of proper procedure (from memory) is that the seller is supposed to get you you to put your name/address in the next available space, fill out a RF200. Give you the slip and take/send it to their local MTO, who'll update and send the book back to you.

In practice, the brown book is given to the buyer with the vehicle and there doesn't appear to be an issue taking a completed RF200 & tax book to your own local MTO and getting the change done then.
