    Hi There,
I want to set up as a sole trader. I am a Psychotherapist.
Does anyone know if I need to pay VAT on the income I take from seeing clients?
    Thanks,
    Louise

You need to register as self employed, and pay income tax on money. You'll also have have to pay PRSI and universal social charge (you'll only pay USC if you earn over 10,000 per year)
    Good luck!

I think you'd be better off in the Accountancy forum. I've no idea whether Psychotherapy is VAT-exempt or not. Thread now subject to the Accountancy forum regs.

If you are over the VAT turnover threshold, then you need to register and apply VAT at the reduced rate to your services

however, if you are also a psychologist, then you "may" be exempt based on the nature of the services provided

    see http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/rates/decision-detail-02141.jsp

I have dealt with this a few times and the Revenue can be a bit tricky so you are best checking with an accountant as to what the exact nature of your services is to determine if you are required to be VAT registered
