SONY a57- equivalent choices?

I heard the a58 is not a direct advancement but more like a bridge between the a57 and a33. Considering the a57 has been out for ages now, has Canon or SONY come out with a body in a similar price range that has better features?

I'll be using the camera for city shots, maybe some macro eventually, no portraits though. So a large selection of lenses isn't a great concern of mine.
