BMW 320D - Black - €10K budget - Dublin

    Hi folks,

Son of a friend has just got approval from the lovely people in the bank for 10K. He wants: Beemer 320D, Black, minter. They're his only stipulations. Should be fairly easy, no ?

Obviously, a post '08 to avail of the cheap tax would be hard to secure with his budget, and that 10K is a max spend; ideally wants to get out for a little less. If anyone has any suggestions, all input will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance:)

I'd say no. By specifying black only he's ruling out perhaps 95% of all cars immediately, and the remaining few % of black cars will above all others have a hard time looking mint. Also, specification makes a big difference to how an E90 feels and most cars here are fairly naked. In his shoes I'd start looking for a well minded example with a good specification in whatever colour it happened to be.

Id also not rule out pre 08 tax, you can get far more bang for your buck in terms of spec and throw the rest of 2-3 years tax. Instead of searching through low priced , low spec and not well looked after post 08s.

Basically widen the search and buy on condition.

Hopefully so - it's much better value than the coupé.

You Sir are correct, saloon it is. Agree completely on the "looking at pre '08" advice. So much more to chose from. The hunt officially commences today, so please feel free to link any "good deals" that you guys might come across, and I'm going to convince him that black is not the "be all and end all" of colours. Maybe a charcoal / anthracite option to broaden the search results ! :D

You will not buy a tidy 2008 320d for €10k and you are probably better off given the timing chain problems these cars can experience.

I'd be looking at something like this:

Op would he be interested in 520d's? same tax and engine and would give him more options, they dont seem to be priced any higher than the 320d's either...

Don't mind the plates. Once he is happy with the car itself, make sure to cross reference the vlc address with photo I'd of the guy selling the car. And complete the purchase at his home to check his address matches where he lives.

Genuine seller shouldn't have a problem with that. Running the plates alone risks you end up with one of those scam cars as highlight recently on here and on other forums which will mean you are out of pocket.

Best of luck with the search OP, my GF has an 07 sport one with 65k km on here and hasn't has an ounce of trouble with it. You just need to keep on top of maintainence, use the correct grade of oil and change the breather filter every two years or second oil change.

    Because the 2008 318's are lower to tax than the 2007 318's. 2007 = €710. 2008 = cheaper (don't know exactly, maybe €500 odd).

The spec is nothing to so with it being a 318. That particular car is the base model ES version. The SE has PDC, MFSW, CC and exterior lighting pack as standard above the ES.

There were actually three trim levels offered here - base, ES and SE, along with the MPack. The situation is further complicated by the range of options, meaning that a base car can have a higher trim level than an SE. Oh, and the SE had different wheels to the ES too. :)

Entry model was the ES, then you had the SE and M Sport.

Yes I know that, I've had all 3 believe it or not and the ES one I had was spec'd slightly higher than the SE in that it had Bluetooth, MFSW and leather, but the SE had PDC I'm commenting on the particular car the OP linked to.

There's only a few combinations that would make the ES better than the SE, as it's very rare to see ES versions spec'd with PDC, iDrive (media pack) but you can see SE versions with these where by an MSport wouldn't. Confusing times :)

That what these forums are for. For what one poster doesn't know, another will.

Post up the cars your considering for some independent criticism.
But I will say these cars are in relatively high demand, so the good ones hold their value relatively well.

Why? BMW make some of the best 6 cylinder petrol engines in the world? Add on top of that, that everyone in Ireland wants a 320d means that the petrols are great value.

Not the best spec in the world, but here are 2 x e90 2.5 petrol with reasonable miles for <€5k:
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-for-sale/5963045
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-3-series-325i-se-z3s9-4dr-x-mas-sal/5970499

Yes the road tax is a bit higher, but put the saving from buying it, as well as interest on the loan towards the difference in tax and you're on a win. That is, unless he does mega mileage..

It is - the E90 is the 3 series saloon, the E91 is the estate, the E92 is the coupé and the E93 is the convertible.

dub-Galway will be a regular run unfortunately. The fuel costs would soon add up.

Meh is how id feel about the diesel. Savings would have to be significant before id tolerate one....

I've driven a 320d fairly extensively, and it's a very good compromise between running costs and performance. Sure a six cylinder petrol would be nicer, but the cost won't be worth it to everybody.

Have driven several and I personally think that a well spec'd 320d is a lovely car to drive, comfortable, responsive and economical. Anyway, diesel is a prerequisite, and I'm not the one with the money........unfortunately :(
