Using YouTube in class - but blocked!

    Hi all,

Just wondering if someone here could point me in the right direction.

I am working as a teacher in a school that has YouTube blocked - which is madness, I know, but they won't overturn that decision.

Anyway, what is the easiest/handiest way to download clips and play them to the class?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

Your best bet would be using a proxy server.

    Try <MOD SNIP>

    .

    http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

Will download it for you, then bring it to school on a USB stick

(Might want to ask the creators of the clips if its ok etc)

Download RealPLayer and you can record youtube videos at home and then bring them into school on a USB stick.

It's such a pity your principal insists on blocking YouTube.
It is an invaluable resource to me in both my subjects.
I'm sure you have more than enough to be doing without all the hassle of converting files.

The Principal mightn't even know, its the standard level of heanet blocking unless you specify you want youtube unblocked. Only issue is the amount of time wasting stuff that kids could look up on youtube........

My girlfriend is a teacher and she was asking me how to get around it. I downloaded youtube downloader for her and if she can do it anybody can because she really doesn't get on well with technology ha. Here's a link:

As a sub teacher I find myself working in quite a lot of schools that block Youtube. Instead, I use Clip Converter and download songs and activities to my USB stick. Youtube is great, there are so many songs and stories that can be used across all levels.

Aye , just be careful downloading third party free software...

"...The free version of Hotspot Shield does come at a cost. The installation opts you into a toolbar, which redirects your default search and home page, and a desktop icon. Also, whenever you activate Hotspot Shield, it will open a new tab to AnchorFree.com and begin autoplaying a video. That's seriously annoying, even in a free product that offers such a valuable service. Still, the toolbars and redirects are optional..."

MOD WARNING: I've taken the step of deleting links to proxy sites above as per other fora practices. I suppose we have to consider the possibility of students looking through these threads and using these links too.
Also, bypassing the schools blocking mechanisms could potentially put a teacher on shaky ground, 99.9% of the time it's all grand and nobody might bat an eyelid, however if an employer wanted to 'let go' an employee, contravention of the work IT policy is a very very easy tool to do so.
    :)

There's always the possibility that the proxy sites will be blocked as well!

I would be very cautious as a teacher choosing to deliberately circumvent school policy by using proxies/dongles etc. This policy is in place, whether you agree or not. I would not advise any teacher to use youtube in anyway in the classroom if it is blocked at school level.

The easiest solution is to download what you want to show at home and then have it on a memory stick. I use the Firefox Downloadhelper add-on.

Aye at the end of the day,(start of a class!) Depending on a stream from youtube to work is a recipe for disaster. Youll end up describing what they would have said..booooorinnnng...zzzz
