    Our school psychologist has suggested toe by toe for weak 1st class boy. We have purchased it and are ready to start. If anyone else has used it I would love some tips etc. Thanks

    It's pretty much self-explanatory. The key is to use it regularly, ideally every day for 10/15 minutes. It's very boring for the teacher as it's very repetitive.

    I've used it with about 20 children over the years and, to be fair, it's been very successful for probably 14 of them.

    I haven't used it personally but I know that the resource/support team in my school swear by it.....

    1st class would find it very ,very hard to concentrate on Toe By Toe, we have found down the years that a child needs to be in about 3rd to really be able to benefit. Do you plan to use it as a parent or as a teacher? Many educational psychologists seem to almost copy and paste for particular issues and I'd be wary of slavishly following recommendations to the letter of the law, common sense needs to prevail.

    Hi there,
    Have used Toe by Toe, but only once for a first class child. I would agree with byhookorbycrook, 3rd class is the ideal age. It's really boring, but tbh, most children actually enjoy it! And it really works - the children just become more confident in tackling the unknown. The only fallout I have experienced is in 6th class - by that stage they have had enough!

    For 1st class, they would need more games focussed activities, in short time spans. There are lots of resources available, but it would be good if you could push the psychologist to recommend one tailored to your child's needs.

    Sorry to jump in, who is the author of Toe to Toe? And is it a programme for children with spelling difficultly?

    Toe By Toe is by Kedra Cowling and is useful for phonological awareness ,which should have a knock on effect for spelling.

    What age child are you thinking about? Brendan Culligan's system for spelling is worth checking out too.

    The child is in 3 rd, pretty bright but woeful spellings, seems to lack phonological awareness.
