    Hi all,

I am just over 6 weeks pregnant and really delighted. (we'd been trying almost 2 yrs).
Anyhow, I went to see my GP last week to tell her my good news and was really disappointed by the visit. She took my word that I was pregnant and basically took my blood pressure and that was it. She gave me a leaflet on what not to eat and that was it? I have no clue what I'm supposed to do next? Do I go public, private, semi private???? (I looked up all these types on the internet). I booked my scan for 10 weeks as I'm very nervous about losing this baby as you hear such sad stories....
Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do after I get my scan? I'm getting my scan privately in Kilkenny where I work, but all going well I will be delivering in wexford. Apologies if this sounds stupid but I haven't a clue what I'm supposed to be doing/not doing etc???

I know it's disappointing but GP did as much as they could at this stage. Choosing your care is up to you and so is registering with your hospital.

    Congratulations.

Congratulations! It does feel like a big let down, it's such a HUGE deal to us but it's routine to the doctors. Once you've booked your hospital and scan then really that's it - most of the hospital/GP visits are in the latter part of your pregnancy.

It is really disappointing but ring your local hospital.
Choose if you want to be public or private and book in.
DO not expect too much from the system and be prepared to organise anything extra yourself or insist on things.

You should get an appointment about 12/13 weeks.

I am 21 weeks tomorrow and have had 1 hospital appt.

If OP is attending Wexford the first appointment and scan is 18-20 weeks if going public. I didn't have to register with Wexford myself, my GP sent a referral letter and about 3 weeks later the hospital sent me two appointments - one for consultant clinic, the other for the scan. So I have had no contact myself with hospital. I don't know if it is Wexford General policy that GP does referral or if it just my GP being helpful.

Thanks a mill for your help, probably makes sense alright that it's a big deal for us but doctors see it everyday. I'm probably just being silly and hormonal ha
I'll register with hospital and go from there
Thanks again for putting my mind to rest. Drama queen that I am.

Not a drama queen at all, it's normal to worry.

    Don't worry at all:)
It can be hard to work out the system sometimes.

I'll give you one better, my doctor asked me to take in FMU for a test, did one and it was faulty and made me collect another sample to test again - also a faulty test. No blood pressure, no weight check, no information on care available. I, luckily, had done research prior and had decided on Cavan Midwife Led care. Asked my GP to refer me (as Cavan had already told me he would do this) and he refused. I told him it was what I wanted as they were offering me Saturday appointments within Cavan and with no need to go to Monaghan General. He laughed in my face, told me I should never believe anything I read on the internet and went on to refer me for consultant led care instead.

I grew a pair and went over him, got it all sorted myself and am now going for the care I wanted. I still have to go to Monaghan for my first scan, but they allowed me to pick the date and time so I could work it around college exams.

Who knows! Could just be lucky to have got the right doctor. I'm with Gorey Family Practice and always find them helpful :)

It's a bit strange alright. Other than your 12 week booking appointment, you really don't start seeing anyone until your 20 week scan & then your ante-natal classes start. If you're with VHI they have a free Midwife service where they ring you for a chat & are always on the end of the phone if you have any queries. I felt (and still at 26 weeks!) like I haven't really had much interaction with the maternity services. I'm lucky in the fact that my GP specialises in obstetrics and she has an ultrasound machine so when I pop in she'll always have a look. Which is nice!

So I'm afraid you're a bit on your own for a while, I suppose if you're healthy & things are going well you won't need to see them until later on.

I'm going with Midwife led care (recommended by GP) but I know that it's quite geographically restricted. So not sure if it's available where you are!

My GP went thru my options and sent the form to the maternity for me - weighed , checked tummy , urine and BP - very helpful ! Had scan and booking at 12 weeks and second hosp at 26 weeks ! 2 nd scan not until next week (31 weeks ) .. You are kind of left to your own devices alot in terms of care I am just lucky with my GP - tells me when I need to come back to see him , when I need to check things with hosp !
